That owl looks like Aizen when he fused with the Hogyoku. The coccoon form.
 
Those cocoon trees give me the extreme heebie-jeebies . I just want to get a huge flame thrower and lay the flame into that.

I've seen those caterpillars and actually it was my first impression until I read the story underneath. Probably not even related to the floods.
