Unable to update iPad to iOS 5.0.1

I've had constant issues since last night trying to update to the latest iOS. I've already downloaded the update through iTunes. It gets to the point where it says backing up iPad and then after a while, that dialog box just vanishes and nothing updates. Then I try it again and the same happens. The progress bar goes for a few minutes and then it just cuts out. WTF? :confused: Why is everything so hard to do with iTunes? :(

What error is it giving you? Error 3200, 3202? I would suggest that you only back up your iPad on the primary computer you normally use for the iPad. Use a different PC to update the software and then use the recently saved backup to restore from. But if you running iOS 5.0 you can actually update via WiFi, on your iPad go to settings>general>software update
 
Yeah iTunes is a schlep.

Try performing a restore on your iPad first. If that does not work try performing the restore in recovery mode. Then retry the update.

No error like that. The backing up part starts and then just stops after a few minutes. When I want to update again, I click the Update button and the same process starts all over again. I need it to backup before it installs the latest version, so I don't want to do it via the iPad and Wifi.
 
If you connect the iPad to the pc, open iTunes, let it backup (or not as is the case), right click the iPad in the menu column on the left in iTunes and select restore from backup. There it will give you a list of available backups. Check to see if there is a current backup available in that list.

If you do it via the iPad you won't lose your files/settings or anything on the iPad, I stand to be corrected.

Thanks, I'll take a look. I just noticed now though, that the 723.6 MB file that I downloaded last night via iTunes is no longer in the directory where it should be for performing updates.

So I will still have my apps etc?
 
I think I'm gonna have to try updating via the iPad tonight. The update file for iOS 5 is missing from the directory where it should be and the backing up option that launches when I click Update in iTunes just goes for a few minutes then closes.

I always download the firmware using a download manager. Get them here: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=8500
In iTunes right click the device and select backup
Click shift+restore to select the firmware file
This then restores to stock as if the device was new
You will then be prompted to restore from backup
Thereafter it syncs apps etc.
done.

Thanks. Can't I just right-click and select Backup, then instead of restoring it as if the device is new, I restore but fool iTunes by selecting the newer iOS 5 file that I download?

No, shift + rstore and navigate to your ipsw and select...
 
Okay, got a bit confused there. So basically, I right-click to back up the phone, then right-click and select Restore? Does that restore the phone as if it's new or do I first need to select the IPSW file?
 
No you physically hold down the shift key on your keyboard while clicking restore in iTunes.

iTunes 10.5.3.3 and iOS 4.3.something. I'm gonna download the file after midnight because I'm on Web Africa's Download+ that time. I'll try then and let you know the outcome. Thanks for the help!
 
I tried backing it up by right-clicking now but I get an error message: "iTunes could not back up the iPad because "Name of iPad" backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPad. Delete the backup for this iPad, then try again."
