E Cape universities turn away 60 000

East London - The hopes of more than 60 000 students were dashed when the four universities in the Eastern Cape turned away more than 75% of applicants, the Daily Dispatch reported on Wednesday.

In total, the four universities received 76 966 applications for 16 767 places, turning away 60 199 prospective students.

The numbers were provided by the Walter Sisulu University (WSU), Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Rhodes University and the University of Fort Hare.

The Dispatch reported the WSU had a handful of places open for national diplomas in information technology and accounting, which required advanced mathematics, but every other place in the province was taken.

The only places still available for first year students were for national diplomas in information technology and accounting, said WSU spokesperson Angela Church.

"The minimum entry requirement for both is level four in mathematics and accounting. All other programmes are full and have waiting lists."

She said the university received 22 000 first-year applications, but could only accommodate 6 329 students.

A Green Paper on proposals to overhaul the education system was released earlier this month by Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande.

The paper is aimed at changing the post-school education system by increasing university enrolment and expanding Further Education and Training Colleges.

In January, a woman was killed in a stampede at the University of Johannesburg, where prospective students were queuing for last-minute applications.

do they all qualify? if so, then something is wrong!
how come every usa student gets to go to college, what is wrong here? all these kids want is a chance, i just dont get it.
 
Looks like some new universities are needed.

Oh wait, no, lets buy some new arms and spend taxpayers money on parties.

They should fix the FETs and get them in there doing artisan courses. Now they all run off to fill up the humanities and then graduate only to sit home because there's no work. We need artisans not humanities majors.

This after universities were merged ?


We need more vocational training colleges and technikons. Very few of those that start at Uni actually finish. Big waste of time and money...as very few of those are academic material...

indeed
more money in plumbing and appliance repairs than as an unemployed social worker.
why isn't this explained at high schools, whats the point of LO crap at schools if they are not being prepared for the real world?

I've noticed a few of your posts recently, and I've noticed that they are all dogmatic, controversial, and suffer from a complete lack of fact.
 
We face an undeniable truth that we require more tertiary institutes to house the massive influx of prospective students that are suddenly eligible for bachelor degrees due to the lowering of standards. Maybe they all do deserve to be there, but if the current system cannot house them, it's not a racist policy that is at work, but rather the inexcusable lack of planning by the Department of Education to facilitate the increase in university students. Blame lies solely on the ruling party's hands.

100% agreed. They should also force the parastatals (and entities such as Eskom, Telkom, Sasol, etc.) to re-open their apprenticeship programs...

Thanks for the compliment. I spent three years there and I can tell you that Rhodes isn't compact. They can double or even triple the number of students if they wanted to.

Bigger classes will result in a drop in the quality of lectures and students. Ultimately a drop in educational standards.

What we need is more technically orientated in service training programmes in this country. Trying to find a turner and fitter or a cabinet maker these days is bloody hard

You are providing as proof of that statement an aerial photograph. Can you please explain how this photograph proves your point that the university has space for double the number it has?
