Are racists dumb? Do conservatives tend to be less intelligent than liberals? A provocative new study from Brock University in Ontario suggests the answer to both questions may be a qualified yes.

The study, published in Psychological Science, showed that people who score low on I.Q. tests in childhood are more likely to develop prejudiced beliefs and socially conservative politics in adulthood.

I.Q., or intelligence quotient, is a score determined by standardized tests, but whether the tests truly reveal intelligence remains a topic of hot debate among psychologists.

Dr. Gordon Hodson, a professor of psychology at the university and the study's lead author, said the finding represented evidence of a vicious cycle: People of low intelligence gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, which stress resistance to change and, in turn, prejudice, he told LiveScience.

Why might less intelligent people be drawn to conservative ideologies? Because such ideologies feature "structure and order" that make it easier to comprehend a complicated world, Dodson said. "Unfortunately, many of these features can also contribute to prejudice," he added.

Dr. Brian Nosek, a University of Virginia psychologist, echoed those sentiments.

Well to be honest... no new news here. Its a bit like an article claiming water is wet. This is the second study to identify liberals to be smarter than conservatives.

Bolded bit.

You will probably find that the authors of this study are dyed in the wool liberals. In fact most major industry and government indorsed writings on this subject are liberal and so are heavily biased.

Liberals are like lemmings. Running to their own destruction and quite happy about it.

Probably because most liberals are ethno-masochists ;).

"Undergraduates (172 women, 82 men) from an American university" for this study. Not really a massive study.

And from what I understand, they compared socially conservative and right-wing authoritarian ideologies to others. Not surprising to be honest. To be fair, not all conservatives are right-wing authoritarian or socially conservative.

Yes, there are vast ranges of political opinions and more often that not there is room for agreement. Studies like these can unfortunately reinforce prejudice in those who see the world from an either/or or black and white perspective. Either you are with them or against them on all fronts. It's just another kind of fundamentalism.

I like this bit from the OTHER study that came to similar conclusions:

Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) support Kanazawa's hypothesis. Young adults who subjectively identify themselves as "very liberal" have an average IQ of 106 during adolescence while those who identify themselves as "very conservative" have an average IQ of 95 during adolescence.

And then look at the source: Satoshi Kanazawa, the Fenimore Cooper of Sociobiology, the professional fantasist of Psychology Today. He's like the poster boy for the stupidity and groundlessnessof freakishly fact-free evolutionary psychology. Just ignore anything with Kanazawa's name on it.
