Potchefstroom - A male nurse has been fired for allegedly raping a patient suffering from depression in a Potchefstroom hospital, North West officials said on Friday.

"The moral fibre of our society is actually going down," health MEC Magome Masike told SABC radio news.

"We went through a disciplinary process where the man was found guilty and was fired."

North West police spokesperson Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said the 24-year-old man would appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrate's Court on February 16.

"The patient was admitted in the hospital for depression. She was sitting in a TV room when she was called by the male nurse to the linen room," Ngubane said.

Drugged, raped

"According to the information received, the victim followed the suspect because she thought he was calling her to give her medicine. It is alleged that the suspect drugged the victim with medicine before raping her."

The alleged rape happened on Thursday, January 19.

"The suspect used rubber gloves during the rape and disposed of it in the dustbin," said Ngubane.

The woman reported the rape to hospital authorities.

The man appeared in court for the first time on January 21 and was released on R1 000 bail.

Masike said the provincial health department had apologised to the woman and the community.

"We believe that hospitals [should be] safe places and we are quite disappointed," said Masike.

Last month, a male nurse from a Bloemfontein hospital appeared in court on a charge of raping a terminally ill cancer patient. The woman has since died.

In December, KwaZulu-Natal police said they were searching for a male nurse who allegedly raped a mentally ill patient in a shower at Osindisweni hospital in Verulam, north of Durban.

Meet your new cellmate, Bubba, he's reeeeal friendly.

This is so horrible to read about - but having said that, we must not look bad at other male nurses because 1/2 can't make the others look bad - that's how it normally happens and it's not fair! :(

If ever there was an understate of the year !! When will government realize that without corporal punishment our society will just become more and more lawless.

What a sick f**k. Can you imagine what that lady has to go through now, after already being seriously depressed.

Leave the 'nursing' to the womenz I say.

Thats kinda sexist ? Leave the Doctoring to men then ? My cuzzie is a male nurse and for many years we teased him mercilessly but he loves his job so much we had to give him credit eventually. One rotten apple dont make it all bad. Nursing is not a easy job , probably one of the most difficult things to do for little reward financially and in general they dont do it for the money , they have a special passion to help. Like everything in life some abuse their position.

A doctor stands to lose a lot more if he crosses the line.Male nurses on the other hand are prone to this sort of thing because they spend more time with female patients especially when they are at their most vulnerable.

I suppose but that would not be fair on the good male nurse's out there.

Oh there have been plenty of stories about doctors raping their unconscious patients as well... I'd say you're at your most vulnerable on the operating table.

Not sure if psychometric testing is done, if not why are these tests not applied at the early stages of selection to screen-out candidates who are likely to be unsuitable for the job?
