Apple, Samsung share 90 percent of smartphone profits

Yeah, surely the headline should be "Apple earns 75 percent of smartphone profits" which tells a more complete tale than "Apple, Samsung share 90 percent of smartphone profits "

Telkom enjoys a governmentally protected monopoly. Last I checked you could buy just about any cell phone you wanted. :confused:

Apple enjoys a vanity- and stupidity-protected monopoly. Last time I checked most Apple loyalists couldn't even bring themselves to look at a phone if wasn't an Apple. :p

Not talking about the folk who do simply enjoy what Apple offers, of which there are admittedly more than a couple. But come on... take a step back... do you really think Apple are in the position they are because the iPhone is that good? I respect them for what they've achieved, but objectively and in isolation their phones really aren't anything to write home about.

Good thing the smartphone market is so massive that there's still enough to go around. Monopolies, even artificial ones, aren't good for anyone.
 
Don't forget that a high percentage of the components in the Apple products come from Samsung.

Including the 3G components that Samsung alleges that Apple are using illegally (ie without paying patent royalties).

Its always funny when you see an opinionated person being proved wrong by the market / invisible-hand. They start claiming that the market is wrong/stupid/vain, and they are still right....funny stuff

And there is nothing wrong with monopolies (Hell, certain sectors will gravitate towards monopolies and duopolies as they the only sustainable model). It is basic economics. It is abusing monopoly power that is wrong.
And they are no where near a monopoly in any case. Nowhere close

I've got no beef with Apple, they do what they do very well. They just ultimately market better than they produce.

That's not entirely true. They have quite a few failed products (Because they just weren't great products)
What they do well, is create a truly great product, and then do great marketing on that product

Only because before Jobs' return they had waaaaaaay too many irons in the fire. I still remember one of my better-off school mates pitching up with an Apple Newton one day and me thinking "that ain't gonna last".

And I don't deny that they make solid products. I do however know that I'm happier tinkering away with an Android than I would be with an iPhone, and I can't help but wonder how much of their market is reliant on blind loyalty and hype.

But diff'rent strokes an' all. In the end we all win.

I agree 100%. However, Apple have had flops since Job's return. The G4 Cube, the iPod HiFi and AppleTV, are two of the most high profile.

And Apple have never been interested in appealing to all people. They consistently target the top tier of consumers that are willing to pay more for higher quality and ease of use.
Those that like to tinker with their phones don't fall into this category.

But they do make fantastic products that are far superior to their competitors (In certain metrics. Not others) and they work around this to make fantastic proits

It might be a hobby but they still managed to sell 1.4 million of the things last quarter so I don't think it's worthy of flop status, yet.
 
Found my K810I the other day.

Old phone but still very slinky. methinks SE need to get back in the game...

I actually own the 1st gen AppleTV, and it is my most used apple device.
However, 2-3 million in sales pa is flop in apple terms (for a $99 device)

Well done to both companies, they are competing nicely creating products users want and making good money doing it!!
