Today UK Immigration Minister Damian Green unveiled a new plan that will see migrants kicked out after five years if they earn less than £31,000 a year.

According to The Sun, he told an influential think tank, the Policy Exchange group, “We will end the assumption settlement is an option for all. Instead, we will accord it to the brightest and best.”

He argued that foreigners must “add to the quality of life in Britain”, that Britain has no need for more “middle managers” or unskilled labour and only the “brightest and best” will be welcome to settle.

Under current rules, skilled workers such as nurses and chefs who have been allowed in on work visas may apply for permanent residency after five years. On the recommendation of Home Office advisers, Green plans to set a minimum salary of between £31,000 and £49,000.

This would be the first time an income hurdle has been set for migrants who wish to remain. Each year About 60,000 skilled workers annaully win the right to permanent settlement, but the Migration Advisory Committee says a £35,000 pay threshold would cut the figure to 20,000. The Coalition has pledged to cut net migration from 242,000 to “tens of thousands”. It has announced a cap on non-EU citizens and crackdowns on sham marriages and bogus students.

According to the BBC, Green said,”We need to know not just that the right numbers of people are coming here, but that the right people are coming here. People who will benefit Britain, not just those who will benefit by Britain.”

“Bringing people to the UK who can play no role in the life of this country is unacceptable.”

“I want us to be much more intelligently selective about who we let come here. We need to know that you’re not going to be living off benefits from day one of arriving here.”

Green also announced new specialist routes to improve the visa system for short-term business visitors and top entertainers, as well as a “young talent” scheme to encourage entrepreneurs and scientists to immigrate.

The Guardian reported that ministers are also proposing to ban British residents from bringing an overseas-born spouse into the country unless they have a minimum household income of £25,700 a year.

Excellent idea. Then the locals won't have to compete with so much cheap labour from India, Africa and Poland.

will keep lazy sponging people out of the country
31k sterling is not unreasonable when earning the same currency

Poland is in the EU, no matter what the UK Govt want, they cant prevent or restrict EU citizens from settling or working in the UK. These immigration stories are mostly all spin and bluster, the majority of the low paid workers now come from Eastern Europe and not subject to immigration control.
 
Yeah it's long overdue. But £31k is not a lot, so while it might affect the lower income bracket, I'm not sure if it will have much of an effect on skilled immigrants who are willing to work for peanuts.

R370 000??? Not a lot??? I wish I earned that in a year. :(

That's per annum. In rand terms it may not be a bad salary per year, but in the UK it really isn't that much if you take into account the cost of living. Many menial jobs pay between £25k - £35k.
 
In real terms it's probably the same as someone here earning between R120K and R240K per annum, depending on the part of the country you live in.
 
People are so xenophobic... its in our genes to be so. Migration is important for the development of a nation.
 
And who will do all their unskilled labour? The economy will grind to a halt without factory workers and food and beverage servers...

Remember, many unskilled British workers would rather live on the dole than work.

This policy will keep more bright, young white people in South Africa.
 
I (an English South African) actually had this discussion this weekend about the importance of migrate labor at a braai this weekend. I sat debating with an Afrikaans South African, and an Indian South African... the importance of migration for a country. They couldnt see it :D
 
Ouch! Looks like my dream of working in UK is impossible now :( I'm currently in the process of obtaining a BSC degree in Computer Science (UNISA). I don't think it's good enough to get me a decent paying job in SA, let alone anywhere in UK.
