Interesting article by Ivo Vegter from the Daily Maverick:

The Chinese model is morbidly obese

South Africa wants to adopt 'the Chinese economic model', President Jacob Zuma is expected to announce this week. This would be a very grave mistake. The Chinese miracle is not what it seems. Just like with the American and European debt crises, this will become painfully clear soon enough. But sadly not by Thursday....

He wants to devalue our currency and take advantage of the cheap labour that doesn't exist and get rid of Cosatu?

No, probably the part where the State owns everything and gives peanuts to the people doing the actual work

It's not only about cheap labor, but hard focused work.

Most don't take pride in what they do, and do a half-assed job of it. All for a paycheck at the end of the month. The Chinese/Japanese take pride in their jobs and thus excel at it. They have a sense of honor.

It's so bad here, that even though you both speak English, 80% of the time the person wouldn't understand what the hell it is you want from them and thus just ignore you/send you from pillar to post.

Import chinese people and then adopt the chinese model, you'll have something. But not with these lazy africans looking for handouts

The current government is not fit to lead, it really is that simple. Not being able to see through the paper thin facade of the current chinese bubble is quite astonishing really.

In the old days people would go to war and this stuff would get sorted out quite quickly, but alas, we are stuck in a country where the ignorant get to decide who leads. It seems to me that a plane ticket is fast becoming the best option.

Wait.... so no fat chicks in this thread?

...bummer

Rubbish. NYT columnists like Thomas Friedman have been telling us how great China's autocracy is at getting things done.

One-party autocracy certainly has its drawbacks. But when it is led by a reasonably enlightened group of people, as China is today, it can also have great advantages. That one party can just impose the politically difficult but critically important policies needed to move a society forward in the 21st century.

Wonder if this would include adopting the Law that states: "The death penalty could be inployed for a gouvernment official found guilty of corruption."

death penalty is not employed for corrupt officials in China. Only unlucky fall guys

The chinese model is to sell crap to the rest of the world that breaks easily so they can sell sell you another piece of crap,to replace the broken one.
That's how they keep themselves so busy, efficient and productive.

Hmm well the Chinese model seems to be working ..... Americans owe them so much money they will be paying for a few generations.
3G modems from china seems to work well  and many other things to
I have never seen such a hard working nation
