Thought it would be useful to have a single thread for people to let us know of their experiences with their new Lumia 800!

Having used an iPhone for the past 2 years, it takes a little getting used to. Had an issue connecting to our exchange server as it didnt like our CA security certificates (had the same issue with Samsung Omnia 7 - so a Windows Phone 7.5 issue), changed the certificate to a Thawte one and then all 100%.

Otherwise phone is very easy to use, and pretty responsive. Small issues here and here, it appears there's no data caching in apps like Facebook / News24, so everytime you open the app it starts from "scratch". Using Whatsapp you cant send video only images.

Great little features like "Contact Transfer" make switching from any other device to the phone a breeze to shift your contacts.

Solid, quality phone overall, with a few things Microsoft needs to work on

If I may ask, what do you use the Facebook app for?
The only time I ever open the app is to reply/send private messages. For everything else the built-in FB stuff is top-notch.

This is a lovely phone with the exception of two points that need attention in my view namely:-

1) Bad battery life - I only use the "Push" Hotmail set to push only new items when they arrive - Battery down to 20% after 8Hrs - My Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro lasted for 18Hrs for the same use.

2) Missing Auto Call Answer using Wired Headset(Only works with Bluetooth Headset) - I require this for road running, thus lazy to push answer button - My old Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro had settings for this funtion.

Otherwise a lovely OS version that works better than the old, not being a Andriod or Symbian fan. I trust that Nokia will send an update patch to all owners asp.

The battery fix update [7.10(8107)] or Nokia 1600.2470.7740.11500) really does not work as stated on all the blogs. The battery full capacity has been increased from a faulty 1000 mah to 1475 mah by this update. To check this use the service code ##634# go to Battery Status.

Nice phone, only thing that really has let me down is the poor camera quality.

Does the menu where the Apps still list everything underneath each other or can it be categorized? I remember the first Win7 phones doing it and it irritated me to scroll way down to get to something.

Currently when you get more than a certain number of apps it gets an alphabetic jumplist.
Apparently tango will be adding support for folders - but that is just a rumor.

Just find that not all the pictures / article links etc display in the native app, whereas they do in the dedicated FB app

In the People Hub only your contacts FB news items feature. So the pages/group/likes news items don't filter through.

Ah ok. I hate using the site for that very reason. I don't give a crap when a friend likes "clubbing seals".

Anyone figure out how to use any MP3 as a ring tone / alarm etc.

My dinosaur 6110 Symbian could do this ...... i would imagine this must be possible on WP 7.5

This worked for me (Only for RINGTONE and NOT any other type of tone) see this:http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/howto/wp7/start/create-ringtones.aspx

yeah i also found that link, but apart from laughing my ass off that this is the official method given my MS, it did not work. Do they seriously expect a standard user to make the music a specific size/time and then jump through hoops with Zune sh*t ..... makes me wonder if all WP developers are fired Apple employees .... i.e. they have all the same bad habits ... only dumber

Call me critical but if anyone at MS thinks that this method embodies the WP motto of 'Put people first' then they are living on a planet devoid of real people.

Why would anyone want to change the music genre to 'ringtone' ???????
The music genre you want to use remains jazz, pop, rock or whatever. All you want to do is use it as a ring tone - this does not automatically make it a different genre.
.... and why do you need to fiddle with Zune on your PC - it's a mobile phone - it should not require a PC for such a simple task.

ok - get over it .....- screw the stupid logic.
- Changed the genre (had to type it in because it is not on the pull down list)
- Synced it with the phone
- Disconnected USB
- Now what? ... does not appear anywhere in ringtone list?
... oh yes .... i should have changed the size to less than 1MB and no more than 40s before changing it to ring tone.
so f$%#@ easy to do - Does Zune have an easy way to crop an MP3 ?
........oh yes i forgot .. i'm obviously too old to understand these new fangled things

Anyone that says that Symbian software is bad has obviously not seen this......

Different strokes for different folks I guess. This has never bothered me. Infact, I still have one of the built-in ringtones.
If you are interested, look in the marketplace - there are quite a few ringtone apps, although that will not solve the particular problem you have with it.

Finally, yeah, Symbian had features that some smartphones today have, but unfortunately it had the UX of a rock. And sucked to use (no matter how powerful it was).

Considering the amount of 3rd party ring tone sales sharks out there and the fact that this has been a feature on most phones for many years, it is though surprising that this is not a standard option (non 3rd party app) .
Many phones from different manufacturers have this as a standard option.

On Android any sound file of any size can be set as a ring tone - on the phone, without any need for PC involvement.
Why does Zune have to be involved at all? (other than the Apple inspired  need to be able to get music on the phone in first place)
Despite jumping through hoops getting a freeware MP3 cutter and preparing a <1m & < 40sec clip i still have not been able to assign it as a ring tone.

Having teenage children has taught me one thing about cell phones:
The success of any phone depends on teenager acceptance - any phone unacceptable to teenagers is dead.
Most teeagers want custom MP3 popular song ring tones.

While WP 7.5 has some wonderful social networking and other cutesey toy capabilities, a simple missing basic phone usage feature like custom ring tones can be a major reason not to like it.

That is an Epic Fail for such a simple task :wtf:
The Android equivalent is drag n drop mp3 file from pc to sdcard over usb (or even download it)
you can then set the mp3 as a ringtone without any issues, and you can OPTIONALLY install an app to crop the song on the phone without having to involve any other device.

I wonder how many similar screw ups MS has added to WP7

Thank you for starting this thread for "USER EXPERIENCES" of the Nokia Lumia 800 but I see the TROLLS have attempted to high jack it. Once again thank you for trying to keep all in the tracks with your informative info with WP OS devices.

Not sure who you want to call Trolls, but the thread was about experiences - good, bad or ugly.
if those noting bad experiences are Trolls then welcome to the club ... re- your own post.

I have bought a Nokia Lumia 800.
Why? - i have always been a Nokia fan. Held out 5 months after my old Nokia contract lapsed to get a Nokia WP.
i was one of the total of 7 real fans that camped out at 5 in the morning for the Lumia 800 launch special at Vodaworld.
it was actually quite funny - Vodaworld had set up a special picket fence speedline for all the 'thousands' of Nokia WP fans.
There were more 'ask me, i'm and expert' - Vodacom staffers than fans...

What does that tell us?

Simple hillbilly answer:
'if yer aint git yor sh*t in order then yer aint got nuttin!'

The smart phone market has two types of buyers:
1. The ones that think they're real cool and believe they are better than anyone else with what they believe to be the best.
..... the i-Told you i-Was better than you with my i-Phone, i-Pad and whatever other i-Sh*t people
2. Those that have seen through the i-Crap and want something that actually works as good or even better without having to sell their souls to the the i-Cult

Nokia WP must fit into class 2 - the problem is that class 2 already contains the top seller - Android. This means that Nokia WP has a major hill to climb ... and ... unprepared climbers with bad equipment are dead climbers...

ok - enough with the phylosophy
i really like my Nokia Lumia 800.
- Excellent Screen - Wow! :)
- Fast ... no, really, really FAST!
- Kick-ass social networking!
- Great calendar & reminder functionality - as good as Symbian! :D
- Ok GPS Navigation (the 6110 Navigator has more features)
- Bing search integration for anything is great and irritating at the same time...
- Good browser
- Music store is good .... but who really does that.... ;)

My previous phone was a Nokia 6110 Navigator (very old by todays standards). Compared to the 6110 the Lumia is a Klingon fighter. Out of this world and definitely amazing.... the only problem is that it is 'out of this world' - i.e. there are some things that Klingons do not consider important, but in my little world they are important. Am i the only one that misses home so much?

Fortunately for Nokia WP us old fogies that miss the old days are unimportant - cell phone sales are driven by the very young.
i also have a Dell Streak Android mini-tablet, an i-Pad (yeah .... i succumbed to the cult) and my wife has the obligatory corporate Blackberry.
How does Lumia 800 compare?
The best thing about it when compared to i-OS & Android is that it is different! i-OS and Android are so identical they might as well make up and admit they have the same father..... except that Android was definitely dealt a better range of talents...
I would rather not compare with Blackberry. In SA Blackberry has a wild card that transcends virtually all minor OS UX limits ..... BIS.
Kids LOVE BB simply because of BIS ! it's obvious why - smartphones crave data and if you don't have it then it's nothing but a standard phone.... -> kids HATE standard phones

Nokia WP needs it's own Wild Card! to make an impression .... and i'm not sure whether dynamic tiles are enough :erm:

@sammaya, thank for your candid feedback :) Now that WP is really taking off in the market through the Nokia partnership it is beneficial to highlight both the benefits and drawbacks. I've also been holding out since December on upgrading, and will still wait until the 710 is released in order to compare mangoes with mangoes, so to speak ;0) One thing that is intriguing to me as that WP is aimed at both the corporate and the enthusiast markets. It stands to reason then that gaps will be identified, which are obviously been attended to with urgency by Microsoft and Nokia. BTW, I don't think trolling applies to someone that is actually using a WinPhone and facing some real frustrations ;)

Yeah, I would agree that it would not really be considered trolling though. It only seems that way because he has listed only negatives and no positives (up until his latest post).
What everyone needs to remember is that for every bad thing in WP7, there are 10 GREAT things. And people do not report on the GOOD, but rather only the BAD.
Go look at hellopeter - there are always far more bad comments than good ones. But that doesn't mean it is necessarily bad.

I believe strongly that anyone with an open mind (no preconceived ideas) will fall in love with Windows Phone, and will be able to look past teething problems (even if they seem like major gripes in the beginning). And I really think this is all that @sammya is doing. He is giving it a good honest try. For WP7 to succeed, we need more people like him [bear with me here]. If someone who hates MS (etc.) gets a WP7 and finds the same flaws that @sammya has then I think they will drop the platform whereas someone who can look past a few negatives and has an open mind will carry on using it. And even if they do go back to whatever they had before, I think they will be excited to try out the next iteration of the platform.

p.s. I apologize for all my muddled thoughts. Had a long day, and I'm buggered.

I hope that im keeping to the spirit of the thread. Initially I was loving the phone but now, I seem to be having issues which aren't being experienced by many others. It happens quite often that after I make a call, the phone hangs. Also my internet connection drops randomly quite often. I really hope that these issues are only confined to me, gonna return it to vodacom for a check-up/repair.

Battery life issues look like they'll be fixed with the new firmware update, hope we get it soon.

If you are looking to get one, I honestly advise you play with the device yourself. The hardware and software gel together so well I cant imagine going back to Android or BB. iOS is still the king but for now im staying with WP for the next two years.

I do not experience any these problems but suspect the internet problem is related to Vodacom network issues.
Enjoy the phone.
