How many of you manage to get by without a medical aid scheme? I am 23 years old now and the total of all my medical expenses in my life have been less than 10 000 or 15 000 rand. I have never been admitted to hospital and have never had a serious illness. It seems really excessive to start paying 1000 rand a month for something that I probably won't use ever...

Are there other alternatives? Like some kind of plan that would cover my medical expenses only if it exceeds a certain amount (say R100 000)?

medical cover and insurance are a necessary evil, at very least get a hospital plan.

Have to agree. I had very little need for medical aid until I was involved in a serious car accident. Without it I would have either been subjected to state hospitals or bankrupt.

excatly it is for the unexpected and should you contract a disease or chronic condition etc and try apply you will have exclusions

Doesn't the RAF cover medical expenses related to accidents?

Went to visit my wife's sisters Fiancée at Katlehong hospital yesterday.

He started getting sick 4 weeks ago, they gave him an actual diagnosis on Monday. Extreme heart failure. He is 25.

his ward mates included a prisoner and there were several more prisoners in the ward next to his.
The guy in the bed ext to him had a catheter bag that was leaking urine onto the floor and the place is in dire need of paint and a serious cleaning (I think a flame-thrower would get it sterile).
Whole hospital smells like faeces and urine and other unmentionables.

If you don't have a medical aid, good luck.

Medical aid (as with car insurance) is only expensive until you need it.

Anyone of us could be in a life threatening car accident this afternoon. Given our road accident deaths, it's almost a given that at least 1 forum member WILL be.

Check out discovery and momentum for a cheap hospital plan that covers 100% med costs (specialists can charge up to 300%) and allow for pvt hospitals in your area. It should make it cheaper if it's associated vs ALL hospitals.

Seriously, you're going to regret saving a R12k a year if you have an accident that leaves you maimed in a state hospital. If you don't believe me, go take a casual stroll through your nearest state hospital...then decide.

I think it depends on the circumstances but it didn't cover any of mine as far as I'm aware.

You're 23, forgive me, but you have no idea what will go wrong with your health as you age, nor can you predict what accidents you shall/shall not have in the future. Yes, it is expensive, but because you're young, as your salary increases you'll incorporate the expense into your budget more comfortably. Futhermore, getting used to the expense now is wise, it'll be tougher to suddenly incorporate it into your lifestyle later when its time to add a wife and have children (assuming). Pregancy costs are no joke, can't imagine having to rely on state.

Try get money out of them and youll see how valuable your life is.

People its simple, if you cant afford it get the hospital plan. You could be the most careful person around and healthy. All it takes is one out of control situation where youre just wrong person wrong place wrong time. Its financially stupid not to take medical aid in an effort to save money.

day to day stuff you can pay out of pocket but hospital plan is a must. comon go gettit!! when a significant other requires a hospital visit and your able to call on your medical id you actually let out a sigh of relief..in that moment those grudge payments were definately worth it!! oh when an old man knocked into me in december i exhaled again..glad i paid that insurance..

I'm also in the same situation. It's a lot of money.

I don't have medical aid, never had one. I'm of the view that since I'm in my mid 20s, I don't go out much and I'm a careful guy and all I don't need medical aid, not even a hospital plan. I am, however, starting to think twice about this. For a week now it's been painful on my lower back, not sure why. It's getting better though. I think this is a sign that I must at least get hospital cover.

I'll take up your challenge and visit a state hospital(s) right this weekend.

Ignore all the nay-sayers and doom profits. If your monthly medical expenses is less than that of a medical "aid" (which only "aids" you to a certain point anyway and not beyond what you may actually need) then take what you would have paid on medical aid and pump that money into a savings account set out specifically JUST for that.

Get a cheapo hospital plan (Shouldn't be more than R800 AFAIK) or one of those "We will pay you R3000 a day you're in hospital for 180 days) type deals. That, combined with your accumulated savings should cover your medical expenses IF something nasty is to happen to you re: car accident or something serious.

If you're generally healthy and take care of yourself and don't take a lot of risks, then life insurance/hospital plan dealy with the savings account will be more than enough.

I was at a state hospital after my accident (nothing serious even though it looked very serious looking at the car) and the ambulance ride over was more expensive than that. Yes, you have to wait in line with other less fortunate people, and the doctors may or may not know WTF they're doing and the staff will give you a run around with files and tests and ****, but it's better than nothing and with the national health care plan (tax payers have to foot the bill for) it won't really be necessary in future. But anyway. I speak out of experience where my friend's baby had to have special care and he had to fork out R35k immediately which his R4k a month medical aid didn't want to pay out and he had to later claim it back from them. The interest on his credit cards were insane and yes, he got the money after 6-7 months, but "depleted" whatever his medical aid were offering and had absolutely no choice to fork out more money just to take care of his wife and child's medical expenses over and above the pre-natal care.

Passed away this morning, hospital didn't even have a heart rate monitor on him.
If you don't have a medical aid in this country and something goes wrong you are in deep deep trouble.
