From car guard to maths teacher

Ogadi, a passionate maths teacher, worked as a car guard in the parking lot of the Zomerlust Spar in Paarl, Beeld newspaper reported.

He put up a rudimentary blackboard and would enthusiastically explain mathematical equations to any shoppers who cared to listen.

“If somebody is so passionate about something that he's prepared to leave his country for it, he deserves to be helped,” said Sunward Park headmistress Ansie Peens.

Saw a story on msn of a caretaker who became a teacher recently

In my eyes that's something a crazy person does. I'd put him on the same level as maniac street preachers.

I guess being a passionate and well educated maths teacher who is forced, by circumstance, to work as a car guard might drive one crazy!

If he is here legally then what prevented him from going to schools, sending out CV's and getting a job in the first place?
 
So street people in South Africa are becoming teachers.
How's that pass rate coming along.
 
In Standerton, Mpumalanga a petrol attendant went from filling up cars to becoming Mayor of the town. And she didn't even finish high school.

How do you know he didn't do all that - go to schools, send out cv's etc?

Refugees aren't automatically eligible for work permits. Someone might have permission to stay here legally as a refugee, but they have to follow the same process as everyone else to get a work permit (including having an actual job offer).

The car guard thing is a support structure created by the Congolese, so when a new refugee arrives they can start earning almost immediately.
 
so basically the whole story is a qualified maths teacher who is a refugee has got a job as a teachers assistant...will hip hip hooray, pop out the champagne, NOT
the heading makes out like an unqualified car guard got some initiative went to study and became a Maths teacher...yeh that would qualify as good news.

If this is the good news story of the day then we really scraping the barrel for good news stories.

It's good news because there are thousands of qualified refugees working as car guards because they have left a war zone at home, do not have work permits and no job offers which would enable them to get one. Here is someone who made himself known, was proactive in letting people know his skills and has been employed doing something he loves.

I doubt you'll ever find yourself in such a situation but if you ever happen to find yourself a refugee from SA who is unable to work in a field you're qualified for and passionate about then maybe you'll think of this story and appreciate how far this man has come.

Some people just don't want good news, when something good happens in this country for someone it's just a bah-humbug attitude. Change your username to Grinch ffs.
