A rhino died during a media demonstration of an anti-poaching treatment today, the Rhino Rescue Project said.

“He responded very well to the treatment and the procedure is 100% safe, but there are always huge risks when such a large animal is sedated,” said spokesperson Lorinda Hern.

The rhino – named Spencer – died after veterinarians administered a drug to wake him up after a microchip and tracking device were implanted in his horn, said Hern.

The demonstration of the procedure was held at the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, in the Cradle of Humankind.

Hern, who was also Spencer’s owner, said an anaesthetic was required for the treatment.

It was suspected that Spencer had an underlying heart condition and that the anaesthetic’s antidote may have triggered heart failure.

Spencer’s age could also have played a role, as he was estimated to be 22.

Hern, who was upset at the death, said poachers created a catch-22 situation in that poaching prevention treatments required sedation, which could in some cases pose a risk to the animals.

A post mortem was being conducted to establish the exact cause of the rhino’s death.

100% safe. The procedure cannot be 100% safe if a rhino dies because the most important part of the procedure is putting the rhino under. Unless they do not think that is part of the procedure.

As of now, the procedure is 99% safe...
 
Rhino's are very badly affected by anaesthetic’s and very sensitive to them - no matter what and how sad -POACHING KILLS ANOTHER RINO.
 
According the Jackaranda, that particular Rhino had an underlying heart condition. Who would have thought? I think they should flatout ban all trade in Rhinos, including hunting!
 
How does inserting a tracking device or poisoning the horn stop poachers? The poacher does not know it is poisoned or there is a device in the horn so he will still shoot the animal and cut off the horn. The buyer might discover that the horns have been tampered with but the animal is still dead. Even if the buyer does not use the same supplier, the poachers will still slaughter these animals because there is money involved.

I'm not sure if I interpreted this right but it looks like you're saying that rhinos are getting more attention than people in terms of protection from the government (or whoever).

I also read the sentence to mean that you wished people enjoyed fighting crime as much as rhinos do.

The murder rate has dropped from 27000 (94/95) to 16000 (10/11) murders a year, I actually think that's quite impressive (not to say that 16000 murders a year is fine).

An overestimation of the population of white rhinos was 20 000 (a couple of years ago), in the past couple of years more than 500 white rhinos have died due to poaching... You're smoking rhino horn if you don't think that's alarming and urgently needs attention!
 
Government should clamp on hard on poachers and other people involved in the trade like how they clamp down on drugs in the far east
