I'm looking at the current Jetta with the following extra's.

Has anyone come across any reviews for this car?
What else can you reccomend for the same price in auto?
Are there any known issues withthe DSG gearbox?

Retail Price: R274,000

Ford Focus has 2.0L petrol and diesel models with dual clutch boxes. More oomph and the diesel's consumption is almost as good as the Jetta.
 
Jetta looks good - does it come with Maintenance plan? Perhaps if it was R20-30k cheaper and it would be an easier choice.

mmm... just looked at the fine print, there seems to be a service plan & a maintenance plan.
I wonder what's the difference between the 2?

The jetta is a nice car, but really R297 000 for a 1.6 Are you a bit mad :-)
Its only 77kw...

Why not look at something a bit better and cheaper, and less risk of theft / hijack?
Ford 2.0TDCi ? 120KW slightly more consumption...
Also cheaper....

Service plan covers the service labour, oil , spark plugs etc.
Maintenance plan covers just about everything besides tyres. A must have if there is a turbo involved IMO.
 
I was listening to cnet car tech podcast. They talked about how VW "cut" costs, one of the ways was the changed the rear suspension from independent to torsion bar or leaf spring not 100% but I'm sure it's not independent.
 
Unless I needed the boot space, I'd buy the equivalent Golf. Nicer to look at, and it'll hold its value better.

Multi-link rear suspension according to the spec sheet. Was changed on US variants.

Combine it with 250Nm of torque and it's perfectly adequate.

The Focus I suggested has 120kW and 340Nm, with marginally higher consumption, lower price and same kind of features. Between those two, I know which one I would go for.

Yes, but also... it's a Ford. Would need at least 650Nm to make up for that.

Seriously though, we all have our preferences. I've never liked the feel from behind any Ford's wheel I've ever been in, apart from the new Kuga - well, new in SA anyway. I find VWs on the whole much more appealing when it comes to ergonomics, aesthetics and tactile feel of the interior.

I'll admit I haven't yet done anything more than walk around a new Focus, and I'll grant it is a good looking car. I'm going on past experiences here, ranging from Figo vs. Vivo to Polo vs. Fiesta to Golf 5 vs. previous Focus to, especially, the previous generation GTI and ST. The Fords have just always looked and felt...well... icky in comparison, especially when you start looking at less obvious details like the material the headlining's made from, welds on the doors and frame being exposed, and the feel of the dashboard. Related to overall quality, I think it's quite telling that you get a 12 year warranty against corrosion on a VeeDub, but only a 5 year number on a Ford...

Golf's the yardstick in its class for a reason. It's just damn good. Boringly so maybe, but good. Depending on one's own judgement and priorities I'm sure either would be lovely to live with, but I'd favour the VW.

point well taken, but at the same breath is you take the Golf 1.4TSi (which I have also looked at as an option), is also slighly on the overpriced side. To my knowledge, it's about R240k for the Golf 1.4TSI. Never in my wildest dreams I would have thought of spending R240k on a 1.4, yet you see many of them on the road.

I was invited to the Golf 6 launch and one of the very noticable pointers which were emphasized was that the 1.4 replaced the 2.0. VW have refined their engines in their latest upgrades to be optimal, with sufficient power to mass ratios.

slight change of plan, there's some lekker demo's out there.
The Honda Accord (2010 demo) is looking more promising, with a whole bunch of extra features that VW do not offer.
 
2010 Demo? In 2012? Don't Demos get sold after 6m?
 
@OP have you driven it? How's the power delivery and feel of the car?
Jettas are generally heavy strong sturdy cars, you can't go wrong with it, they look good, feel good and will hold its resale value.
If you happy with the power, its better than any Ford.
