Cool devices to heat up SA’s telecom market in 2012, says industry expert

Cool to see that Tim lists his 2011 predictions and see how he has done there. Easy to make predictions, but we do not often see people criticize their own predictions.

Wi-Fi offloading will be an interesting development in SA...

Problem is: To have cheap and fast Femto cells and/or WiFi offloading, you need cheap and fast fixed-line access. This is still not a reality in SA and at the current rate, won't be for at least another 3 years.

expect to see Wi-Fi networks prosper as a result

I travelled across the USA recently and had a great expectation of benefiting from the 'ubiquitous, free wifi' experience. I was discouraged.

Sure, wifi was prevalent in hotels, airports, restaurants etc right across and only a few charged extra for it. However the speeds were usually less than impressive and coverage sometimes poor. One place only had one AP (at reception) with a small coverage radius very nearby.

This was a disappointing overall experience and I certainly thought that an SA experience in 2012 could not be a lot better than that.

I must say I'm not horribly impressed with these "predictions"..

Tablets will get more popular, because they're getting cheaper...
Ultrabooks will become popular, because they will be marketed HEAVILY.
Notebooks are already commoditised... you can pick up a decent(ish) laptop for like R3500...
Innovations in mobile banking?... well again, relatively easy to predict.. but personally not somethign that I will ever use...
Wifi-Offloading?.. Honestly, I've been doing that for years and most people I know have been doing the same.
