Gatfol dreams of world domination and bags of money

I'd want to see how this works first. I can't imagine how they can improve my current Google searches, but it would be cool if they can somehow improve it.
 
Lets see how it works
Most of us here realise that if a number of people search for an identical thing, the choice of language & words we include or exclude in our search determines the different results we all get.
Sometimes we cant quite think of the correct or exact words to use - this may change things a bit - who knows ?
 
However, according to Greyling, Gatfol works differently to the technology that powers Siri. He explained that they can take any English sentence, swop out words and phrases for others with the same meaning, and put it back together so that semantically and grammatically the resulting sentence is the same as the input.

Google already has this... You just put a ~ in front of the word you want to find all words similar...
 
On the one hand I really want this proudly SA start-up to succeed. Not particularly optimistic though.

The article is somewhat vague on what this tech is actually supposed to do. In short: User types in a full grammatically correct English question, Gatfol applies magic to turn this into keywords that then get jammed into Google. This process is supposed to result in better results than you would get if the English question were searched directly w/ Google.

Unfortunately this has 2 rather serious issues:

1) It requires natural language understanding, which is a problem since its difficult...so insanely difficult that its used as *the* benchmark for AI: the Turing test.

2) Google already doesn't large parts of what is being proposed. Allow me to demonstrate:

Go type "g-spot" (no quotation marks) into Google. Look carefully at result #2. Its a relatively obscure video codec tool. Obscure yet Google ranked it #2. Why? Because Google also "crawls through bodies of text and determines the relationship between words" and used this to work that it is dealing with 2 different contexts: Some of the results relate to the female happy spot while others relate to a codec tool.

On the other hand, maybe he has had some stunning epiphany that changes the rules of the game. Who knows? Its been done before (Google founders vs Yahoo) so however unlikely, the possibility can't be dismissed. Regardless of how this turns out he definitely deserves props for raw courage.
 
When I read "g-spot" I turned off. Great idea and I wish the guys all the best, but come on man G-SPOT has to be the stupidest play on words I have ever come across "excuse the pun".......
