No mass IT retrenchment says Absa

Don't silly. She will get a bonus cheque for saving them money. Ironic?
 
lmao.. it's a vicious circle the ICT industry in SA is in. I'm just sitting back watching while i prepare to leave SA

I can't judge if this was true or not, but if they were planning mass retrenchments they can't just say it now can they. Some critical people might leave. But they definitely are integrating a lot their IT platforms with Barclays so I suspect their will be some retrenchments/headcount reduction through attrition. My bet is on retrenchments.

From what I've heard from two sources, nearly all the contractors responsible for ABSA's IT software development have been given an ultimatum. Their contracts will not be renewed and they need to apply for permanent positions.

What ABSA and Barclay's fail to mention is that most of ABSA's current IT software development is going to be outsourced to Barclay's software development house in India so the majority of the IT development consultants working for ABSA will probably lose their jobs.

Lovely.

I'm so glad I'm not in that line of IT - it is a very stressful job. And news like this will not be welcome...
 
Oitsourcing does not always work.

I read the daily wtf on a semi-regular basis, and there's always some horror outsourcing story.
 
seems generally that the economic tide is turning. and doesnt seem to be for the better. although if you watch people swiping at the tills we are having a good year..:confused:
 
I know perm staff have been given forms to re-apply for their positions, contractors have been sent back to their contracting houses until further notice...that says a lot
 
I worked for Absa Capital for a while. Barclays Capital already ran all their infrastructure and systems. We had NO say in anything we did. We had to just follow procedure, monkey see monkey do, don't try and think for yourself and for heaven's sake don't even THINK of anything innovative. Barclays view SA as a backwards 3rd world nation and obviously everyone employed in SA is completely clueless.
I expect the same thing to happen to Absa's systems and infrastructure.

Now that is a job I don't even want to do.

You sometimes have to think outside the box, especially with problems etc.

I resigned 2 days after Barcap shot down a POC that I did that would have improved my clients' day CONSIDERABLY.
 
Unfortunately a big percentage of IT staff are just not necessary anymore.
With self healing apps, remote management software etc. Companies don't need such a big IT support staff compliment.

IT tech's have become victims of the very technology they support.
Developers are being replaced by cheaper labor from India

Q: Which field in IT is still locally viable? WAN support? Systems Analyst? Programmer? DBA? Software Engineer? ???
