Another "Top Cop" with connections to the criminal underworld?

SOUTH Africa's super sleuth Piet Byleveld accepted a wedding band from a businessman under investigation for links to the notorious Rolex gang.

The Rolex gang operated in Johannesburg's affluent northern suburbs and stole expensive watches and jewellery from wealthy people. They earned the name Rolex gang as they would mostly follow people wearing these expensive timepieces and rob them at gunpoint.

Their victims included well-known personalities such as Discovery CEO Adrian Gore, socialite Edith Venter, celebrity lawyer Billy Gundelfinger and Judy Sexwale, wife of cabinet minister Tokyo Sexwale.

The Sunday Times can reveal that the man Byleveld publicly thanked for his "wedding rings", Tony Vardas, is under investigation for his alleged involvement in buying and selling goods stolen by the Rolex gang.



Maybe Donovan Moodley will get his retrial if there is a suspicion that Piet Byleveld is linked to a criminal. This reminds me of Jackie Selebi and Glen Agliotti.
 
He is not a policeman anymore is he? He left in 2010 after serving from 1972! 38years service!

If he know the guy is a criminal
 
Even if he did not know that Vardas was involved in criminal activities, the seed has been planted that he received a gift from a criminal and people might start looking into his background and or cases. Donovan Moodley said that Piet Byleveld abused his power etc and that's part of why he wants a retrial. Armed with this information about Piet receiving a gift from a criminal, Moodley can say that there were other motives involved when he was being questioned by Piet.
 
people you miss the point here. This has nothing to do with the police. The title is misleading. He left the police in 2010 already! He only got married 2 months ago! As a private person surely he is entitled to accept gifts. The person who gave the ring is not a criminal although there is some suspicion he may have received knowingly or unknowingly, stolen property. Piet thanked him and others, for the gifts received, shortly after the wedding. He did that openly. (The You tabloid had a story published) This days he is doing private investigations. This gift might be related to his work but not to the police - unless he is trying to bribe some policeman.

What if Leigh Matthews family sent/send him gifts after that trial, I am sure Donovan Moodley would have something else to say. Vardas was a witness in a case that Piet was involved in and he goes and buys the couple a wedding ring whilst there is a suspicion of him being involved somehow with the Rolex Gang, that must look suspicious in some circles.
 
Not correct. Piet knew Vardas from a few years back when Vardas helped as a witness in a case regarding illegal diamonds. As Piet gained popularity more and more people including policeman (and myself) wanted to befriend or stay in contact with him. Keep in mind, this is the top class of crime and policing. Things are a bit vague at this 'altitude' :D I did not trust Vardas from the begin and I don't think Piet does either. But there is little to directly connect him to any crime. Just suspicions atm. Depending how he is playing his political poker he might get hot or not. The reporters jump the gun as usual. Fact of the matter is, Piet is since 2010 not in the police anymore yet the media still see him a policeman. WTF
 
Who would not want to befriend a top cop, it's not like no one has ever done it before? The problem comes when that cop starts getting gifts from suspicious characters. No matter if you are still a cop or not, people start wondering what is the connection between you and the person giving the gift and if something happened between the two of you.
 
He can thank the guy publicly now because he is not a cop anymore. However there will now be questions over any gifts that may have not been publicly acknowledged when he was a cop.
