Bit more complicated than that, I think the holding company had copyrights for IPad in asia, and apple paid them around $50 000 in 2001, they wrongly assumed that they bought all the rights, the ones for China were not held by the holding company and instead was held by the subsidiary so it wasn't sold to apple as part of the sale, so I think they forgot to make sure that they had all the rights and just assumed they also bought the rights for china from the holding company.

A very expensive mistake to make IMO, but they will most likely settle for a few million (some website even mention figures up to $1.6 billion) .

Yep like I said, BAIL so that their devices don't get banned(jailed) in china.They are actually lucky that the company would rather make a quick buck rather than block apple completely and market their own ipads in china.
 
O F that apple made 100 billion profit, i would not settle for less than 10 billion.
