Apple a force to be reckoned with at 30 years old

I like the Apple products, but they are making "toys" now and selling music. Apple should make computers! NOT fashion items. YES, the iPod is selling and is a pretty cool toy - but how long can they hold on... they have a slipping grasp in that niche market currently.

If apple fell off the planet now, would it make a difference?
 
RichardP : Their main focus is most certainly computers. In fact, with the current Intel transition, they are at one of their most strategically important periods in their history.

Now if they would please release the new iBooks

:rolleyes: AFAIK Apple never stopped making computers - in fact I bought one (G4 iBook) just the other day.

With the delays in Vista more and more people are looking towards switching over - especially with the emergence of the cheaper/faster Intel machines.
 
its not a case of A is better than B .. its who can set the spin doctors and market better. Apple used to be the DE-FACTO standard for Desktop Publishing, that niche is now gone. There are a multitude of places Apple are FAR superior to PeeCees, but over-pricing and marketing has killed the apple. The same story on the Amiga... it kicked PeeCee in EVERY aspect but marketing screwed it up.
 
According to IDC Apple PC sales boasted an increase in total PC shipments by 48% last year as well as increasing market share in the US.

All of the DTP ppl I know - myself included - use Mac's and wouldnt seriously consider anything else.

Price wise – recent comparisons have shown the new intel machines are more than competitively priced - especially the mini and the macbook pro. Once you get into adding support, security, and other software the macs often become far cheaper to own, operate and maintain.

I agree that the Mac OS is far better, however it is a bit of a lottery trying to get a perfect Apple with their dismal Chinese QC department.

I agree that apple is not on the way down.... but my view is they make fashion accesories... like SMS pr0n, the trend will disapear and Apple will have to re-invent themselves again. Apple done almost nothing to the computer for 10 years.. 1990-2000 except make the G-series systems and a display that was the size of an A4 page... I would not rate them as revolutionary. As I said in one of my previous posts, If Apple fell off the planet today, what will come to a grinding halt? nothing! on the Other hand, if Microsoft disapeared today(hopefully :-) - there will be a big impact.

YES, I am looking at buying an apple system... but I cant justify its purpose for the cost.

RichardP : I have to disagree. Apple have been innovating in both Hardware and Software, creating the best of breed in both. Microsoft has not done anything of similar note in the last decade. If you are talking about market share, then yes, people will notice MS falling off the face of the planet much more so than Apple
 
Why do people even try to compare a software vendor (microsoft) with a hardware vendor like Apple that also happens to do software too.

Anyhow - the 90's big shift was towards the G series but its almost as if you've forgotten the advances of the past 5 year - let alone 12 months. Intel chips are a huge leap forward in terms of processor power and the undeniable fact that Apples have a longer productivity span makes them more affordable than you'd think possible.

Included in my stable is a powerbook that I bought more than 4 years ago - meanwhile my boss was replacing her dell or toshiba or whatever annually because they didnt last. She's since switched to a iBook of all things that she loves. We've also saved a fortune in secondary software such as anit-virus, security, etc. Come May we'll be allocating mac mini's to the rest of the staff and finally ridding ourselves of windoze.

Apple machines might look good but thats only secondary.
