I just wish that the Government will notice that Voice and Data are the same thing as they are alot of the time telecomminications is misinterpreted to "Telephone" and Datacomms is 'Data"

Increased Competition for Telkom? WTF?!?!?!?!?!?

Definition of a group of retards: The South African Government.

I mean come on! 1) You're only competing with yourself, if any competition arises from this at all, 2) You could make your own lives easier if you forced telkom (WHICH YOU OWN A 40% STAKE IN!!!!) to drop their prices and then you'd be able to make more affordable rates for yourselfs and your citizens. I mean come on - LOGIC HERE PLEASE!!

Is this just for government use or do they want to compete with Telkom to supply consumer services?

I also fail to see the logic here. Surely it is easier and WAY WAY cheaper to force Telecom costs to be lowered, that to build and maintain your own infrastructure? Or, even just force Telkom to supply goverment at a reduced rate?

It's as if the Government is scared of Telkom (perhaps its lawyers?), in spite of the fact that it's a major shareholder. It's nothing short of a joke.

they will build the network with taxpayers money, privatise it after a couple of years and call it Telkom2.

Don't even JOKE about something like that! :eek:

Guys, please. Like Wills has stated, don't joke about this! Considering what has happened with Telkom, your joke might actually be taken into serious consideration by Poison Ivy! :eek: :)

Plans are in the pipeline for the South African government to establish its own telecommunications network

ARRGH! Government already has a whole bunch of national IT networks!
* Sentech
* Eskom
* Transtel

Granted Eskom and Transtel are partnering up in the SNO but the govt could easily just use their spare capacity and they could do so TOMORROW!
