I was expecting this tbh. The Airline business seems to be taking strain. Even Comair reported a loss the other day, thanks in part to a 41% increase in fuel costs!!!!!

Not pleasant times in the airline industry I think.
 
SAA can go and die in a fire.

Why must I keep them up and running if they don't want to take fiscal responsibility?

It's great to have a sugar-daddy who'll bail you out every so often, but your competitors doesn't...

Badly run so get in new management -ones that can do the job properly and hey no window dressing.
 
Let them die - let competition take its course. If they were better run, they would not need help.

Capitalism should reward those companies fit enough to compete. If they bail them out, they are rewarding uselessness.
 
Requests for a government bail-out for a company operating in an industry that is full of private companies (Kalula, Mango, British Airways, 1Time, Velvet Sky...) should be met with naught but derision. It is truly laughable.

In any real industry, a struggling company should simply die. Its space would soon be filled by a more agile, more streamlined and more capable company, or, indeed, left empty if filling it was not demanded by the market.

Until South Africa understands this, our economy, government and way of life is threatened. We cannot call our country, "Capitalist."

Unfortunately, the government will certainly help them and we have no say in the matter. Er... do we have any say in anything?

Bail outs are big these days, in fact I would guess that there are not many governments around the world that have NOT been doing so.

But remember, as Mila pointed out, operationally they are making a profit, however this request is for capex to do what they stated in the article.
 
Let them sink I say.

They dont have the capacity to create a sustainable model. Rather let private industry create it.
 
I also think we should stop bailing them out now. Privatize them already! If they still cant make it then so be it. We have international airlines from all over landing here. Its not like we will be stuck in our own country with no way to get to the outside world. AND....Comair is in the process of launching a international route from Durbs to Gatwick. Should SAA fold and dissapear into the blackness, I am sure Comair would love to expand their services further into the outside world.....be it under the Kulula or BA brand.

It would be sad to loose such a big heritage though as our Flag Carrier...but at the end of the day if it puts such a big drain on the coffers..then its best to let it go.
 
They undercut their competitors to force them out of the market and now they want a bailout. What a joke.

Really - enough is enough!
ANC wants its bloody hands in every piece of the pie and can't realise that it should walk away from this, Telkom, Transnet, mining and leave the art of running a business to businessmen!

And what is happening is SAA can keep their pricing similar whereas the other private airlines like Comair who is suffering also will have to raise prices for tickets, become less attractive to travelers and could go under...why? Cause the guavamint is bloody stupid!
