whats up with all the wide screen monitors

Why are almost all the monitors you see today widescreen? Its great for movies and games but terrible for almost everything else. Almost all tabs, toolbars and menus are horizontal, not vertical.
Right now, im typing this on a widescreen monitor, and this textbox has about 10cm of flat grey space to either side of it.
Office documents, emails and webpages are all easier to read when they are not spread out across the whole screen.

Is it just me who prefers more vertical space for work?

Are they slowly phasing out 4:3 monitors?
 
how is 4:3 ever better ?

We actually see in rectangle not in square so it makes sense for screens to be wide.

4:3 is far superior. You will be hard-pressed to find a decent monitor in that aspect today.

(I have one 20" HP IPS in landscape, and one in portrait. It is perfect for that situation, because they are almost exactly A3 size, and other monitors are useless in portrait mode.)
 
16:10 ratio is the next best thing i.e. 1920 X 1200. I agree, 16:9 is :sick:
 
My 6 year old HP 19" IPS 4:3 is still my favourite screen amongst all the massive widescreen LEDs I do, and have, worked on. Aside from movie watching and I suppose gaming, widescreen's are from ideal.
 
Almost everything we work on, from paper to cellphones to computer screens are rectangular. Why would you want to work in a square (4:3)?
 
Because it's actually easier on the eyes, and it's 2012, they've been phasing out 4:3 monitors since 2008 already
 
Delete all your bloatware toolbars- browser should look better.

Hide Ribbon in M$ Orifice.

Move your Task Bar to the left of the screen, so Start window is top left, show desktop bottom left (Win7).

16:10 if you can find one. I prefer 16:10 to 4:3, as you can compare docs etc easier on one screen if it's wider...
 
16:10 is amazing, but I am having a great time with my 16:9 32" TV screen. It just isn't the same watching HD on anything smaller.

I think you're a decade too late. People have already complained and moved on, then complained about the death of 16:10 a few years ago.

I'm just happy I have my T260.

Protip: Get rid of unnecessary toolbars.
 
4:3 is pretty crappy, as others have said, rectangles are where it's at.

Although, I wish they'd still have the proper, 16:10 wide screens available. That's pretty dang close to the golden ratio which our brains naturally feel comfortable with (which is also why paper, etc. has the shape it has). 16:9 is the devil's work, as is the new tendency for super-duper-ultra-extreme-widescreen used in movies that leaves black bars even on 16:9 TV's.

almost everything we work on, sheets of paper, books, newspaper columns etc are portrait, not landscape. case in point- which is easier to scan through:

I'm just a poor boy,

I don't know it just frustrates me. my friend bought a 21" monitor- the thing can fit like 3 lines of text on a document, but displays a movie beautifully

I suggest you find a 16:10 monitor then set it in portrait.

For me the sweet spot for a usable widescreen LCD starts at 23", an old Acer 2017 (20" LCD 4:3) I have seems weirdly oversized by comparsion these days.
 
Erm, if it irritates you, why have the app window full screen?

The extra space is unbelievably useful if you use apps like photo editors where you can move the dialogs off your photos.

uhhhh why not just set the window (say word) to the left or right half of the screen... Then you can view it just as you would on a 4:3...?
