LONDON, England -- Universal Pictures and the online rental firm Lovefilm are launching what they say is the world's first download-to-own movie service in Britain next month.

They will be priced from £19.99 ($35) for the latest releases to £9.99 ($17.50) for older films. Downloading a film will take between 40 minutes and an hour.

Thats just plain daft - charging more than for a dvd? Take Virgin's latest release prices - King Kong - £14, The chronicles of Narnia - £13, Harry Potter £15. You get the physical dvd as well as any other bonus disks etc.

Its like they want it to fail and for people to continue downloading illegally.

EDIT - ok - after ftfa I noticed they still send you the physical dvd but is it really worth the extra money?

Yeah, I don't understand the pricing either. It should be a lot cheaper, because now you don't have the cost to burn it on DVD. That's the whole point. I've downloaded some MP3s off a site for this exact reason. Where the CD costs around $12 to buy (nm shipping costs to SA) and downloading all the MP3s is around $3-00.

With their pricing model at the moment it would be cheaper to buy the DVD than download it - go figure!
