All isp's are ripping us off - we get 1% of what we pay for!!!!

i have been battling to come to terms with the amount of our internet usage

i have a uncapped adsl package with an isp (ive found they are all very similar) and a 4096kbs connection with telkom

i have done some calculations below which demonstrates that we use only 1% of the potential bandwidth that we could possibly use (calculated on downloads only) and we we are choked and regarded as an extraordinary user

this means that we are being vastly overcharged for the service that we receive

Calculation
4096 kbs is my line speed which should allow usage of
245760 kb/min which is
14745600 kb/hour so it follows
353894400 kb/day = 345600 mb per day which is
337.5 gigs for a day

but I get choked almost all the time so we use about
124000 mb for the whole month

therefore 0.358796296 of daily possible usage which means

if I use 124000 mb (my actual monthly usage) I am actually using only 35% of my possible daily usage for the whole month

my question is WHY should we be paying for potentially 10125 gigs per month while in reality we have choked usage while using up only 124000mb (121/10125) which equates to less than 1% of the potential monthly usage!!!!!!!!

A 4096 line indicates that you sync at 4096kbps which is 512KBps (Kilobytes per second). This equates to a practical 425KBps due to TCP overhead.

Now taking that into consideration, and this is assuming you are 100% unshaped and achieving this speed 100% of the time)
425KBps -> 24.9MB/min -> 1494MB/hour -> 35GB/day -> 1085GB/month.

Now where do your funny calculations come in again?

First of all, the line speed does not mean that is the speed of the downloads you will be getting.

If i am to understand your rant you are getting over 100GB per month and you are moaning that they throttle you.
Oh please youre the reason our lines are ****ing slow!
 
Someone is mixing up their bits (b) and bytes (B).

4096 Kb/second
= 245760 Kb/minute
= 14745600 Kb/hour
= 353894400 Kb/day
= 44236800 KB/day
= 42.1875 GB/day

Oh and btw, k=1000 (scientific) and K=1024 (IT).

ok so i may have missed a zero

thanks to froot for clearing that up

assuming he is correct and the capacity is 35gigs per day
surely that should be the amount available to a user

in my example we use 124000 mb approx per month

1,040,187,392,000 .......... bits
130,023,424,000 .......... bytes
126,976,000 .......... kilobytes
124,000 .......... megabytes
121.09375 .... gigabytes
0.1182556152 terabytes
0.0001154839 petabytes
0.0000001127 exabytes
0.0000000001 zettabytes

which is approx 121/(35x30) = 12% of usage of what i pay for

and why should you concern yourself with sharing when you should be getting what u pay for?

wtf?
 
If you want to download that much then you need to get a more expensive account like Openweb Gold.

You are pretty new to the internet right?
1. ADSL = best effort service. Hence you cannot always expect 100% speeds.
2. If everyone went at 100% speed 24/7... imagine 7am rushhour online, 24/7.
3. You obviously expect too much out of it.

Not exactly a ripoff.

ISPs pay almost 4-8 times the price the consumer do for a dedicated pipe size.

Go to Telkom and order a diginet line, and compare that price to ADSL, and you will quickly notice the price is vastly different. This is because diginet usually promise 1:1 contention ration, meaning you can actually flatline the pipe 24/7 and they won't even stop you. Again, you are actually paying to be able to do that. With ADSL you pay a 1/4 to 1/8 of that price, however the ISP still pays the same price. How do the ISP get around this? They oversell the pipe they bought, so they sell that same pipe to 4-8 people, sometimes even more, so they can also make some money out of it, and lets be honest, this is what all business' are in business for.

So now that you have read the above, you should realize ISPs are actually selling connections at a loss if the consumer downloads 24/7 at flat line speed. This is also the reason why M-Web said, uncapped adsl is profitable, as long as you have a massive user base.
