The number of U.S. subscribers to broadband high-speed Internet service jumped 32.3 percent to 42.9 million lines in the year ended June 2005, the Federal Communications Commission reported Monday.

The number of broadband lines jumped 10.4 million lines over the 12-month period, 5 million of which were added during the second half of that period, the FCC said in a new report.

Remember the article "One million Telkom broadband users in 5 years" (http://www.mybroadband.co.za/nephp/?m=show&id=1914)? By all accounts that target will probably not be reached at the current tempo of uptake. But it puts our 1 measely million target in perspective.

Telkom says it is focused on achieving its goal of gaining 1 million broadband customers by the end of 2010.

Papi Molotsane, Telkom’s new CEO, said last year that they want an ADSL fixed line penetration rate of between 15% and 20% in three years time. This translates into at least 680 000 ADSL users by the end of 2008.

Telkom had 120 000 ADSL subscribers at the end of last year.

If Papi's KPIs and KPAs are measured by his statement above, he is not going to be taking any more bonuses home for the next 5 years.

To reach this ambitious goal of 1 million ADSL users in 5 years, an annual growth rate of 52.9% will need to be sustained.

Assuming that we can muster the same growth rate of the States of 32.2% annually that will translate into a total of only 484,549 South African ADSL users.

And that is just for Telkom! Not even figuring the SNO into the equation!

Very, VERY ambitious Papi. Or should I say deluded? If they have 300,000 Telkom ADSL users by that time I'll eat my hat... unless they're planning on DRASTICALLY reducing their prices. And knowing Telkom, that's not bloody likely.
 
It could have been possible, if they didn't fire everyone! :(
Anywho...
Naturally, it's hard to compare SA with the US, but still.... :)
 
US has alot more peops than 40mil. what would be good is to compare what % of the population that represents keeping mind they are a more advance country with better infrastructure thats kinda been going forever. Also what % has phones compared to here. Also is the % increase on people who don't have phone lines or of those whom already have phone lines.

The United States is 6.66 times more populus than South Africa.

Remember that I was comparing the annual broadband growth in the States (32.3%) with the Telkom targetted growth rate (52.9%). My point was that it is very ambitious.

Using the lower 32.3% growth rate, Telkom would achieve less than half (484,549) of their target (1,000,000) over 5 years.

I would suggest a radical new strategy is required. Otherwise, our bandwidth poor country will be an information desert very soon.
