Vodacom battling Cell C on 08419 number range

So Cell C is enabling users to call international for cheap and the other operators don't like that. Their ability to rape their own customers are being curtailed. Shame...
 
what lies, What bs. what about the 087 numbers that u can do local call to international with.

its the same, VC, MTN , will have to pay local terminate rate for these to the voip providers.. so they mays well block them to hey???? just the same as they will have to pay cellc terminate for the 08419 numbers.
 
Vodacom are being charged local termination rates to terminate a call to Cell C ... That's what Vodacom customers pay for, terminating calls. Stop being idiots Vodacom. Vodacom just can't stand to see people making phone calls without parting with ALL their money.
 
yea.. SA desperately needs a net neutrality type legislation as this is gonna get a LOT worse fast. Smart phones are very capable of making VoIP calls directly too and with LTE it's even less of a problem. Funny how tech evolved to where using it with over pricing is like cutting yourself.

Anyway I think they need to take head out of arse and think about what they suggesting since in the end it is a locally terminated point. fact that it is relayed is not part of agreement. It's like Telkom complaining when you use their local only bandwidth to vpn into a system that breaks out internationally.

I don't know the exact rates, but I do know making a call from Cape Town to Johannesburg is cheaper if you route it through London first. So that should give you an idea of the termination rates for international phone calls.
 
This entire situation is ludicrous and the Ombudsman should step in and slap some sense in to MTN and VC. If you call to a number in SA you pay for that termination, if it is rerouted from there it has nothing to do with you. Are they going to ban PBXes too? If I get my PBX to reroute a call to my mobile or VOIP client are they going to block that too? How about Skype - why not ban all voice protocols while you are at it?

Utterly ridiculous and they have NO legal grounds. Cell C get your legal team involved, should be a slam dunk.

In other news MTN blocks all 087 numbers as they "illegally" use data networks to terminate calls without compensating MTN. Vodacom plans to join, but isn't quite sure what is going on.
 
Vodacom charge Cellular rates for calls to 082 152 which terminates to a PBX, So do MTN when calling 083 1222.
 
Vodacom used to run the same service www.cheapchat.co.za throught their subsidiary Gateway Communications. I think the service was not profitable and they canned it.
 
Iburst, another Vodacom subsidiary at that time, also ran this service. @Jannie (from iBurst), please give us your comment

It varies. Just as an indication, our wholesale rates are from 3-4c/minute for calls to London, up to R7-R8 for Cuba Mobile. Most of the USA/Canada, and Western cities are under 10c. Asia is mainly under 20c, including mobile numbers. Africa is generally more expensive, with some cheaper destinations in the 30c-60c range.

There's quite a healthy markup taking place there.
