The other night while standing in a shopping centre parking lot, I suddenly realised that security companies or car guards to be more precise, are adding to the high number of car hijackings.

A couple of years ago, without all the car guards, it was quite easy to pop into a parking lot, pick the car you want and nick it. These days, with car guards, that option has almost disappeared. So where do you get your cars from? At robots, with the people actually still in the car, and most probably getting hurt in the process.

I say, get rid of the car guards, let them steal the cars in parking lots, when less people can get hurt.

My 2cents

i say shoot the b@stard highjackers/car thieves and claim the country back from fear and villainy!

how about not stealing the car at all.

you're trying to solve the problem by treating the symptom and not the cause

@Acid - Sure, but that will most probably never happen. My point is that they will always want the cars, no matter what. Better to have it stolen while it is parked in a parking lot than with you and your family in it

No, it is not a defeatist attitude at all.

Rather, answer the question: "If someone diddecide to steal a car (because we all know SA is crime free), is it better to be stolen from a parking lot, or someone being hijacked at a robot?"

I agree, shoot the car stealing bastards on the first offence, they are much less likely to come again and commit a second offence ;)

Hijackings and associated murders are a spin-off of security.
Ask yourself, if you were a car thief, and had just hijacked a car, would you not be fearful that the owner would contact Tracker etc and you would be caught in a second. Killing the owner is a natural way to stop this.

Now, before I am flamed for the above, I am not condoning this behaviour, merely giving another point of view...

yeah but u are missing the point entirely.

Instead of trying to help the criminals steal the cars we should be a) making sure that they will be caught and adequately punished and b) attempting to make a society in which they do not have to steal in the 1st place...

attempting to make a society in which they do not have to steal in the 1st place..

true. I for one do not think that rational, normal, educated and well-adjusted people would turn to crime out of choice. Only a tiny fraction of society are inherently "bad" - if this were not true, we would never have come down from the trees and formed tribes and nations.

However, the fight for survival is stronger than the need for fairness and justice.

FFS ... stop reading so much into thoughts coming out of a person's fingers :D

hj2, at this point in time, we all know that your points a and b are WAY in the future. Think short term, think interim solution. Think out the box.

FACT - They do steal cars, by any means possible.
FACT - They will continue to steal cars until such a point in time that your points a and b can materialise ... which is definitely not now.
FACT - If they want your car, and you give them crap, they WILL shoot and or kill you
FACT - If you are not in your car, they cannot shoot and or kill you

And I am not trying to help the thieves steal cars ... I am thinking of the car owners and their familiies

First of all u missed some letters off my nick landym ;)

but seriously i am sorry i just dont agree with u in this regard.

The fact is, this is MORE dangerous for them - due to insurance companies and required anti-theft and tracking devices. The problem is exasberated by these measures.

If I steal a car in a parking lot, how long before you discover the act? Who sees me doing it? I might be 100m away, before you come back and phone Tracker etc. If I hijack and kill you in on a small road at night, I will have at least an hour to make my getaway.

Not cool - for sure. But that is my opinion on the problem.

Yeah, that was on purpose :D

You don't have to agree, I actually don't care if you agree or not :p . Quite frankly, I don't care if this turns into flame fest. My point is this:

If you are forced to steal my car, for whatever reason, I would prefer it if it happened in a parking lot, while I am NOT IN IT, rather than being hijacked by some twat while my family is in the car.

Always improving anti-theft systems in cars are also one of the leading causes for increases in hijackings.

Plain fact: it is far easier to steal a car at an intersection than in a parking lot... at the robot the keys are in and the motor is running... would be an idiot not to hit here - car guards have got nothing to do with it.

fine. it is a poor solution to a very minor aspect of a much bigger problem. But yeah, i would rather have that as well if thats what u want to hear :p
