Downloading Embedded Quicktime/Real Player movies..?

Hi all,

I visit an aviation website that have embedded movies in Quicktime or Real Player format. Now these videos are pretty cool so I would like to save them. The only problem is my download managers seems to battle as the site requires a login to access the pages. I have tried adding my details for this site in my download manager but still no joy...

Is there any proggie that would grab these files for me and save it?

yip, firefox!

open the page where the movies are embedded. go to "Tools | Page info | Media" scroll down in the list until you find movie (type will be object or embed). select it and click on "Save As".
 
if that works I owe you a case of beer...*

or what I do is install K-Lite Mega Codec Pack Full and Quicktime/Realplayer Alternative. Use Firefox to stream the whole clip and once it's done, right click on the fully streamed clip and say "Save as Quicktime Movie" ...works everytime !!!
 
Or use the firefox plugin, called Media something or other...

Will check at home though, go it there...
 
as an audiobook geek - who's had to learn different routes to skin the cats - here's some angles:
for real player, try this simple route:
save the .ram file, which is a few k in size - then simply rename the .ram file to .txt, then open it, and see if the morons who encoded it, have left a direct http link to the file itself thats being streamed - more often than not, the direct link is lurking there in the text file. (which is what a .ram file is - its a text file redirecting towards wherever the actual file is hosted.)

Also, I'd never use realplayer, look for and download 'real alternative' - its freeware, and unlike realplayer, has no spyware and doesnt try take over your system.

A simple plan b, is to hunt for an app called 'total recorder' which - if you find a ahem full version, can be set to record the audio streams coming via your net connection. It records in mp3 and stops when the broadcast is done. Then there's also 'streambox VCR' which captures streams themselves, at fairly high speeds.

Can just add that it WORKED! THANKS!

Only installed the K-Lite Codec Pack from http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm, and separately an apparently newer version of Quicktime Alternative.

Some 'filter error issues' during the Codec install, but otherwise worked on first try
 
Click Here. All you have to do is click on the icon in the right hand corner and it will give you the download link! Works on just about any site (including YouTube and such).
 
Downloading streaming flash movies

Ok, with the previous post (and the referred to url), the issue of downloading streaming flash movies (i.e. flash that is streamed based upon a preloader flash file) is introduced. Seems that that firefox extension neither does it. Anybody got a solution?

An example to capture/download is http://www.tennisone.com/club/lessons/braden/backhands/bh.free.php

Been looking all over for a solution - would truly love to hear about one.
 
I don't know if this is the best solution, but you can basically get a program that records your screen activities, and just highlight where the video is. You play the video and then when it's finished you save the video in the program.

Do watch the .flv videos you'll need either need the FLV player (clunky) or the Kazaa Light Mega codec pack either drag & drop the FLV files into Media Player Classic or associate the filetype.

VLC plays - and converts - .flv quite well.

I just look in the source for the .flv and copy the url - in the case of the one above my browser's activity monitor told me that there was a 19mb file being downloaded so I just copied that one (http://www.tennisone.com/club/lessons/braden/backhands/backhands.flv) and put it in to my download manager.

Wow - Again it works..

QUESTION 1 : What software+ do you use for my 'browser's activity monitor' - I use FF & occasionally both Opera & IE7, and would appreciate a suggestion for all.

QUESTION 2 : I always use VLC Player and yes, it works fine on FLV-files. But does anyone have comparative experience with FLV player (someone called it clunky..) - for an example does it play in better quality? and will it let you play more flexibly, in slow motion?

NOTE : As to the other suggested FF extension solutions, I could not make neither UnPlug (even with the 'Stream Save via VLC' option configured) or GetVideo to fetch other than the (non-streaming) swf file. Didn't try the other suggestions mentioned.

FYI, just registered my 'Passing by' identity to initially only say thanks for the initial MOV-file tip. But I now keep coming back as I understand your South African guys know your stuff (I'm located in Europe)
