Quiet/Silent CPU Fan for AMD 939

I have an HTPC. it is fairly quiet, except for the (standard) CPU fan which I can hear when i'm less than two metres away from the box.

i see alot of "quiet" fans on the online stores. can anybody recommend one that is quiet. i'm not overclocking, so i'm looking at spending <R250.

also, how important is the type of thermal compound? is thermal compound thermal comppound or will it make a diffrence getting the more expensive stuff? recommended brand/type?

i know what thermal compound is and how it works... just don't know if it really makes much of a diffrence.
 
I have a zalman 7700 fan very quite but i think it may be too large for a HTPC case.. Look at their range, I prefer them they make very good products. The other choice is a fanless heatsink again i think your case might not have enough space. Have a look at www.sybaritic.co.za they have a good range.

thanks. have been looking at syberitic, but there are so many choices.

i have the Thermaltake VB2000 case, which is the same size as a normal atx2 case. lots of space for heatsink/fan.

so the paste doesn't really make a big diffrence. cheap stuff it is...

APG - so it does it come with thermal compound/grease.

:-) you have three recommendations for Zalmann now... should make you choice easier.
 
4 recommendations for Zalman! :D

The type of thermal paste is not too serious, unless your CPU is running 3-5 degC hotter than recommended for the CPU type. Arctic Silver is a well-regarded favourite, but it's not absolutely necessary.

Just remember to add a paper-thin layer of the compound when you install the new HSF.

Ah, multiple cyber-personalities! Good one :-)

Congrats on your choice... forgot to mention it also comes with a fan speed controller so you can really make that fan shut up.
 
yip. don't like leaving a trail everywhere i go.

APG - did you know (reminds me of chappes), that you can set the aquistic (spell?) level on most hdd's. speed vs sound.

you can use hdparm under linux.
 
andres101 - yip, was suggested I use silentdrive or hddlife. tried neither yet, though, have a new 120 Gb Barracuda that needs to get MCE on asap.
 
andres101, have you enabled cool and quiet?

And yes, thermal compount helps, without it my CPU went up to 61 under load, with it only up to 54. The Antic micronised silver one is what I'm using, difficultish to apply, but works well.
