Specrum assignment: Use it or lose it, says ICASA chair

Yawn! .. we've been hearing this since 2009 yet state-owned Sentech still sits with unutilised spectrum.
Take it back of STFU already.

state-owned signal distributor Sentech has been sitting on spectrum in the 2.6GHz and 3.5GHz bands despite continued threats that spectrum license holders would lose their assignment if they don’t use it.

Yet they still haven't taken back Sentech's spectrum...

This isn’t the first time such a policy has been threatened, with the Department of Communications (DoC) tabling its draft Radio Frequency Spectrum Policy that contained such a clause as far back as September 2009.

The former Minister of Communications, Roy Padayachie, re-iterated this position in May 2011.

...despite this being their view for years
So how long does a company get to hold on to spectrum without using it before they lose it? A decade?

Agreed. That's why a simple provision allowing for unlicensed operation of dynamic spectrum access systems would (quite literally) solve those problems over-night.

Talking does not equal action ICASA...

PS I heard Sentech were using their frequency to transmit porn..
