A petabyte of data in the blink of an eye

A petabyte is not that much, considering. It works out to about 3Gbps average over the month. For say, a million users, that's about 3kbps average each...

Fibre broadband networks generate much more than that, with fewer users.

Yeah, even the larger local ADSL providers are doing multiple Petabytes with 100 of thousands of users vs the mobile networks' millions.

Data, including SMS, now accounts for 21.4% of revenue in SA – up from 19% in 2010, and 14.8% in 2009. Data excluding SMS accounts for 12% of revenue, it said.

SMS probably accounts for 0.5 or 1 percent (if not less) of their data traffic. Just shows how overpriced SMS really is!

I wish operators got the picture that unless they selling cheap, spectrum will be a problem. In the end we can't go back to the great days where the 2 operators dictate price.. sure there are 4 operators now but will they compete on what matters the most? If only icasa pulled this with the LL, wuld be the end of Telkom
