Aggressively priced 75GB and 150GB business ADSL packages launched

4mb Uncapped from WA is R599...
4mb Uncapped from RSAWEB is R499...

I just cringe when I read articles like these. Looking at first world prices just shows how far behind we still are:

BT Business:

20Mbps
Unlimited usage
ÂŁ15.00/ month (ex VAT)

177.112 ZAR

paying about R570 for a 60 gig adsl account from Afrihost.

works great, the odd torrent and p2p stuff seems to be unshaped and flys at maximum speeds.

And i signed up this Afrihost package over a year ago.

Um where?

Last time I checked business uncapped 4Mb was R1999 from WA and RSAWEB.

Home ADSL != Business ADSL

If these come with static IP's it's a bargain for small companies compared to other business ADSL capped packages

http://www.mweb.co.za/productspricing/InternetAccess/BusinessADSL/fixedip.aspx

Considering that they have stated that this product will be shaped it would be fair to compare it to the retail products not the business.

Sorry Altech we aren't stupid, just because you label something a "business" product doesn't make it so.

And anyhow most businesses choose uncapped to make sure the company doesn't stop functioning just because you hit some arbitrary data limit.

Nice try, now go back to the drawing board and come back with something competitive.

They are going to be shaping P2P and similar services that aren't used by BUSINESS not a home user wanting to download the latest pirated game or series. You really shouldn't be using your company internet to download torrents, the IT department will come down on you like a ton of bricks if they have half a brain.

Also most small companies aren't willing to pay R2k a month for a 4Mb uncapped connection. I know of small companies that still use ~10GB capped products simply cause they can't justify spending R2k on internet in a month.

Any business that relies on the internet to function shouldn't be on ADSL, they should be on dedicated links if it's that important.

Generally the business accounts have lower contention ratios which come into play during business hours when networks are busy and not at night when most home users access the internet and the networks don't run at full capacity.

Have a look at: http://stats.jinx.net.za/

It's basically dead in off peak hours but running near capacity during business hours.

I guess this is good pricing for business users.

But I agree they could be more innovative. There's so much that could be done if they didn't let the old way of doings take preference over developing new products.

To compare business products with consumer products in not fair. Business ADSL accounts have lower contention ratios, more redundancy and a better overall performance than consumer products.

Shaping P2P in a business environment can be a benefit – I find it challenging to see how P2P will be used in a business.

If you want to do a pricing comparison, then look at the business offerings from IS, Vox, Web Africa, Telkom and the like.

Afrihost Gold packages have been R9.50 per gig since way back (Starting with the 50GB packages).

Altech 75GB - R699 ex VAT = R796 inc VAT = R10.61 per gig
Altech 150GB - R1299 ex VAT = R1480 inc VAT = R9.86 per gig

Afrihost is still cheaper and is of superb quality!

I would steer very very clear of a business package that does any type of throttling or shaping on the product.

I make relatively extensive use of P2P stuff in a business environment... granted its not torrents, but its still P2P technologies.

RPM how about a test for us to get some actual stats on the contention, latency and so forth vs some of the retail per GB providers to see if there is a major difference. Say MWEB, Afrihost, Cybersmart, WA and RSAWeb for a start. Basically just test the accounts on the same line over a few days and see if there is any consistent performance difference.

I can agree calling it business and shaping can still mean lower contention etc, but am a bit doubtful. Also, how is the shaping implemented - as in how will my other business applications get affected? I would like to know what is prioritised and what not as for many things like VPNs, SSH and such are priority protocols.

Altech Technology Concepts (ATC) has launched a business ADSL promotion, offering a 75GB capped product at R699 (Ex VAT) and a 150GB capped product at R1,299 (Ex VAT).

Former Altech TC CEO Wayne de Nobrega explained that the new product is targeted at the business market and will be geared to support business applications and bandwidth. Peer-to-peer type services, for example, will be significantly throttled to ensure that business applications perform at their peak.

FAIL

This is aimed at businesses.

While I agree that there shouldn't be any shaping on a business product, I can tell you that business class p2p stuff like voip/skype and the rest are not shaped.

I will agree that this is a worthwhile product if they can prove better redundancy (multiple pop's and international links with higher idle capacity). A simple side by side comparison of Mweb / IS vs Altech would show that even their retail products have better redundancy in place than Altech.

Secondly you can either argue that shaping p2p is good on a business account or it isn't. You cannot argue that it is on Altech and isn't on Mweb.

Frankly I tend to agree that most businesses would prefer shaping in place to prevent abuse but then you have too compare this account to Mweb retail. And side by side against Mweb retail it just sucks.
