Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula on Tuesday said the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) will get the R50 million they need ahead of the 2012 London Olympics.

Sascoc previously told government it needed more funding from the Lotto Board to prepare athletes for the July Games.

However, the board said it could not give additional funding because they were bound by legislation stipulating how the money could be distributed.

Mbalula said he would personally appeal to the Lottery Board.

“Sascoc has to be supported. The Lottery Board has to support our athletes going to London.”

The Lottery Board has to support our athletes going to London. - means there are a lot of cadres who want a free holiday in London.

However, seeing as the Lotto are ' bound by legislation ' Mbalula will have to call in some favours.

Odd though that they could give 50 million to the kiddies party but not for our athletes.

And at the same time could you give a precise 100% accurate breakdown of how that R50 million will be spent.

Ha! Sasoc. Send it to SANRAL and lower our tolls. I'm sure the lotto can take a chink out of what we have to pay.

Why do we get the feeling there is plenty more corruption in the offing with the Olympics being the free ticket to some shopping in London

/hugest sigh!

The lottery is a joke! I long for the days of the old KZN lotto where you saw worthy causes listed (in the newspaper) that the money went to.

I heard this mentioned on 567 last week and seem to remember that the team of athletes was much smaller than the team of free-loading officials

Very much agree wit that one...

The KZN Lotto was very open about where the money went... I always used to buy a ticket in the KZN Lotto.

And you also use to know of a few winners, with the new lotto I don't know (directly or through someone else) of anyone that has won.

A friend of mine mother won the lotto a couple of years ago. Last time I heard from them the family was in ruins. It seems drugs and alcohol became a problem for some of their family members.

If I remember correctly they won around 10 million. They were better off without it.

Mmmm and the "officials" can sit up front in first class again and the athletes in the back just like the Para Olympics??

This corruption, whilst headed up by the bafoons will never end - they will milk the country till we need financial support from Zim.
