Friends no more? Egypt's MPs declare Israel No. 1 enemy

Egypt calls Israel its number one enemy, saying it will “revise all its relations and agreements” with Tel Aviv. In a protest against Israeli attacks on Gaza, Egyptian MPs have voted to expel Israel's Ambassador in Cairo, and to halt gas exports.

*"Egypt will never be the friend, partner or ally of the Zionist entity [Israel] which we consider as the first enemy of Egypt and the Arab nation," reads the text of a report prepared by the Arab Affairs Committee of the People's Assembly, the lower house of Egyptian parliament.

The resolution was passed on Monday night with the majority of the country's Islamist-dominated 508-seat chamber voting in favor of halting of gas exports in protest against Israel’s attacks on Gaza.

Egyptian MPs also called on the government “to revise all its relations and agreements with that enemy,” referring to Israel.

According to the approved text, MPs suggest the expulsion of Israel's Ambassador to Egypt and a recall of the Egyptian Ambassador from Tel Aviv.

Monday’s vote is said to serve as an indication of how relations between two countries may wrap up next.

There has been no official comment from Israel on the vote so far.

The vote is seen as largely symbolic as only the ruling Military Council, the country’s current government, can make such decisions.

Egypt became the first Arab nation to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, after intense negotiation. However, since Hosni Mubarak was ousted last year and the new government came to power, the treaty became one of its concerns. Egypt’s new parliament, in which half of the seats are controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood, has several times threatened to cancel the agreement.

Former Israeli Ambassador to Egypt Zvi Mazel has told RT that something is wrong in the parliament, if MPs from “a great country like Egypt” approve such statements.

“Israel is a friend of Egypt. We did nothing wrong to Egypt since the peace treaty was signed,” Mazel said.

The only reason for such statements, Mazel says, is “fanaticism and hatred.”“There is no other explanation to such a statement,” he said. “It is nonsense.”

Meanwhile, Egypt has brokered a ceasefire between Israel and the insurgent groups based in Gaza. It went into effect during the early hours on Tuesday.

But despite that, there were reports of continued shelling of Israel and retaliatory air strikes on the Gaza Strip.

During four days of violence, 25 Palestinians were killed and 200 rockets were fired at Israel. Twenty of those killed were militants and the other five civilians, according to medical officials. At least 80 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were reported wounded.

Egypt had earlier condemned Israel's attacks.

"We are against the Israeli attacks on Gaza, as they violate the settled cease-fire between the parties," said Egyptian Ambassador to the Palestinian Authority Yasser Othman on March 10.

In the wake of the NGO funding scandal the Egyptian parliament is to consider cutting more than $1 billion in US aid along with putting the military-appointed interim government to a vote of confidence.
The move by the lower chamber of the parliament comes after the March 1 departure of six American defendants in the case, leading to accusations that US pressure had led to interference in the judicial process.
The People’s Assembly urged that the person who allowed the Americans to leave Egypt be put on trial and declared its desire to refuse massive annual aid from the United States, Al-Ahram daily reports.
"We hope that members of the American Congress listen carefully to the decisions of the Egyptian parliament – the parliament of the revolution -and know quite well that the Egyptian people will never accept tinkering with the sovereignty of Egypt or American assistance to be used to humiliate it," parliament speaker Saad El-Katatni said as quoted by the paper.
Socialist El-Badri Farghali, said "Egypt should stop obtaining assistance from America because this is not assistance from America to Egypt but from Egypt to America, and we want to uncover the names of all those who were involved in receiving money from this assistance."
However, the move by the recently-elected parliament could have only symbolic significance as the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which heavily relies on the US aid, will most likely veto it.

Lucky he was western backed, if it was a Russian backed president the uprising would have been either been quelled or Egypt would be in a year long civil war, while Russia would have called for no military intervention while sending military weapons to the country.

Was watching Fox News last night (found it streams helluva well from it's XBMC plugin) and they were saying that Israel is under scrutiny for it's treatment of Palestinian women. Seems they are falling out of favour with everyone these days.

egypt has never had friendly relations with Israel - they not at war and Egypt these days can't take the chance of going back on the peace treaty, they have too much to lose, but normalisation with Israel is way off and has always been the case.
Not really a news worthy story, even with Mubarak at the head, things were exactly the same

Certainly not but I was testing XBMC's ability to stream video and that was one of the plugins I tried... scary stuff, don't know how people can compare it to other networks.

While this is a likely scenario, nobody wants another Arab-Israeli war
 
I've been to egypt twice. Both times I was there I encountered entrenched hatred against israel. It's part of their culture, it's never going away.

So the entire country is rising up, odd i thought it was only certain places while other places are pro assad. I can see how part of the country is the same as the entire country though.

Sinbad what this encounter you have twice? I was in egypt and i never noticed it, would love to know what you saw.

How would we know how many parts are affected when international media is restricted in Syria, if the "war" takes over a year and Asad is trying to appease protesters with symbolic gestures that a significant part of Sirya is rising up against him.

Not surprising considering the fact that the "hate" you speak of is a response to zionist colonialism and Israeli state terror, until zionist terrorism and occupation ends and Israel embraces peace i dont see it being very popular.

Did you do any touristy things around Cairo or Luxor?
Often, the tour guide would point to things like 6th October street (the day Egypt won a battle against Israel) and I recall a specific site which had an engraved list of egypt's enemies with israel right at the top. I can't remember where it was exactly, this was back in 1999. Anyway, the tour guide was vitriolic in her hatred for israel at pretty much every step of the way.
