Article: Australia commited to beating S.A. in SKA bid

How exactly are they going to be committed to beating us?

They have done their bid, we've done ours.... the winner has practically been decided already, its just up to a final meeting of the SKA Advisory Council...

The best bid will win, and it won't be done on emotional stuff, it will be purely technical.

IF we win though, I can see the Aussies crowing about political interference, and us getting it is a "pity" award....

We didn't pull the Mandela card, did we?

Don't count the chickens yet, even though apparently the technical report recommended us.
Let's hold thumbs though.

Clearly the Aussies don't know how good SA is with arranging tenders :D

As for the vote, It'll probably be a tie with China & Italy voting for us while Netherlands and UK voting for Aus.

If you read my post, I didn't say who had won.... because I know its still (publically at least) up in the air...

yes the technical report recommended us, but thats no guarantee...

At the end of the day the best bid will win, whether its us or Aus.... and I will congratulate whoever wins because the SKA is such a big deal for humanity as a whole.

Nice, think on all that copper wire coming our way :D
On another note, how can South Africa even think to host such a project when they have such a bad social situation? On the other hand money talks. It will be much easier for China to bribe Africans then Australians. WTF South Africa need telescopes not food and houses. After all only a quarter of the population go hungry.

Oh yay... the shortsighted view comes out...

And what Copper Wire?...

This is an artists impression of what the "little" SKA would look like..

Would the flooding they have been experiencing be an issue at all? obviously it would be an issue but i mean would it be built in an area that is prone to flooding?

I hope we don't get it.
The SKA is a very bad idea for the Karoo. It's much bigger than an actual square kilometre.

Great article

The whole point of the SKA is that there are as little buildings and civilisation nearby as possible. The less EMI, the better.

The 'artist's' impression here is simply the KAT-7 array copied and pasted. KAT-7 has those support structures and tarmac because it's an array used for testing so access is often needed. It's what's commonly known as a prototype. You don't see completed buildings with scaffolding do you?

No one is beating anyone else... the decision is based on the kind of data they can get from that geographic location.

No Mandela/Capt Australia card to play on this.

What will this bring to a third world country? Base stations will have to be installed all over southern Africa. It will be interesting to see if the government in South Africa will try to implement "Affirmative Action" among the handful of scientists manning the South African station. WTF Look how much the world cup improved the lives of the disadvantaged. Not to mention the infamous arms deal.
