Two large solar panels jut out of the barren landscape near Imneizil in the Hebron hills. The hi-tech structures sit incongruously alongside the tents and rough stone buildings of the Palestinian village, but they are fundamental to life here: they provide electricity.

Imneizil is not connected to the national electricity grid. Nor are the vast majority of Palestinian communities in Area C, the 62% of the West Bank controlled by Israel. The solar energy has replaced expensive and clunky oil-powered generators.

According to the Israeli authorities, these solar panels – along with six others in nearby villages – are illegal and have been slated for demolition.

Nihad Moor, 25, has three small children. The family live in a two-room tent kitted out with a fridge, TV and very old computer. She also has a small electric butter churn, which she uses to supplement her husband's small income from sheep farming.

"The kids get sick all the time. At the moment, because of a change in the weather, they all have colds. Without electricity I wouldn't even be able to see to help them when they need to use the [outdoor] toilet at night," Moor says. "I don't want to imagine what life would be like here if [the panels] were demolished."

Why, FFS?

You build yourself a tent/house without permission, and then a couple of hippy Israeli's put down solar panels without permission (with german money) to give you illegal electricity in your illegal home.

Then you go and moan about the evil jews hatin' on the ever-so-innocent arabs.

The problem for Palestinian communities here is that permission to build any infrastructure is very hard to come by. According to figures from the civil administration quoted by the pressure group Peace Now, 91 permits were issued for Palestinian construction in Area C between 2001 and 2007. In the same period, more than 10,000 Israeli settlement units were built and1,663 Palestinian structures demolished.

The Jewish settlements in Area C are connected to the national water and electricity grids. But most Palestinian villages are cut off from basic infrastructure, including water and sewage services. Imneizil, which borders the ultra-religious settlement of Beit Yatir, currently has nine demolition orders on various structures, including a toilet block and water cistern for the school.

Eish!

Tell me, don't the israeli's build illegally?

I have yet to see anyone tearing down their homes. Funny how it's fine for them to build illegally but not the palestinians. Really sad to see the way israel conducts business. I can bet their excuse will be something along the lines of it will be used to launch rockets :D

This reminds of a story i saw, broke my heart actually:

A palestinian farmer had build a concrete thing that captured the rain, let's call it a water contraption. Catches the rain then it filters down and he collected the water. The israeli's came in and bulldozed it. I think it was a water cistern but i cannot be certain.

I am sure the pro israeli crowd will have some excuse for this horrid behaviour.

The destruction of water infrastructure is a standard tactic for the Israelis, They want to keep the Palestinians on a trickle.... To this end, wells and cisterns are regularly demolished.

They'll be quiet as until they can find a way to blame the Palestinains.

Perhaps those panels are a part of a terrorist plot? They probably power rocket building muslim terror machines or something, at least thats how the local Israel worshippers will spin it.

Although I do not support this inhumane behavior I do understand the Palestinians have brought this unto themselves. They refuse to co-exist with Israel. Maybe Israel should just follow the middle-east principles and do what Syria, Libya and Egypt do, ie exterminate their internal "foes" the middle-east way.

Killa, why do you not comment on the Syrian, Libyan and Egypt issues, I would like to "hear" your views on what they and the rest of the Muslim and Arab world do hey? Human rights issues is a bastard hey?

The bl@@dy USA and Israel again hey?

I'm sorry but what the USA have to do with this conflict? They have no worries what israel do or how they treat these people. Remember friends of the USa can do what they like.

This situation is so unique, there is no way to compare it to the countries you mentioned. When palestine get their own country or get absorbed into israel then perhaps but until then i cannot see a way to compare them. Perhaps you can enlighten me because the situation is so unique i don't think i have ever seen it before.
