Mako makes an all-in-one ADSL modem, router, firewall, anti-spyware and Web and mail filter, all managed centrally by a telecommunications carrier. The product is meant to appeal to small and medium-sized businesses without a large IT staff.

Chief executive Bill Farmer says South Africa is a good market for the product since many large companies have smaller regional offices scattered throughout the country without a lot of IT support.
Because of the problems setting up reliable fixed-line networks in Africa, which include lines being stripped for copper and elephants knocking down poles, Mako configured its products to run over the cellular network of Vodacom, which operates in five African nations.

The product operates over most wireless standards, including 3G networks and the emerging Wimax standard.

5th Mountain Networks will distribute the product in the country, selling to telcos and direct to customers. Mr Farmer says it's likely 5th Mountain and Vodacom will push the product into other African countries.

Thats is truly brilliant. Finally some innovation. Will start making Government, Telkom and others to wake up!!

Lets just hope the cost is good otherwise we back at square one!

WiMax would be a nice alternative though - just keep it far from the cellular providers.
 
Jesvs, what an ignorant article! I'm surprised Telkom doesn't harp on to this excuse.

Also, perhaps our people wouldn't have to steal the bloody cable buried underground if they could afford telecoms without resorting to criminal activities.

Well you can see it's a Farmer talking, he does not know what happens to Farmers in ZAR
 
We can't have adsl line because there is to many tropical jungles in africa with blue monkey chewing on the cable... no wonder my latency is going down... and more packet loss
