To Change Jobs or Stay with the Dev house I'm at ?

Hi guys,

Got called by some lady from an agency saying she got my CV (from where ? I don't know) and that they are looking for Junior Devs with my particular experience in SharePoint. Went through the motions and now I'm looking at 3 offers. I'm 21 with just under 2 years experience and making about 10k.

Thoughts.. Highest offer is 16k gross, 11nett. What would you guys do?

Mind you, my dev. house has some of the most experienced developers I have seen in a while and the amount of experience I could get from them is immense and also they are quite lenient to my situation.
 
If you like your current job then rather stay and hope you get offered a decent raise in the future. Or actually approach your boss and be open to him/her about it and ask if it would be possible to be paid more. It feels silly that first time that you do it but out of experience I can say that many bosses will listen to you and possibly try to keep you.

Think about an amount that you want that will make you want to stay and ask your boss if you can have that. Eh, be diplomatic about it though. The best is to be open and honest.

Clearly you are not sharing what that is about....

That added with the experience possible are already positives why you should consider staying for another year or so. How are the people towards you?

besides more money what positives do the new jobs offer?
 
21 + 2 years experience => I assume no degree?

Choose the job that offers the best experience (since you're young) and has the most favourable conditions for you to study further (either by financial assistance or time off to study etc).

At 21 I wouldn't be chasing the money, especially if it's only a couple of grand more.

Never chase

Try to look at it as follow

Where will you be getting the most experience and what level of development can you achieve in lets say the next 3 years

The money should be a secondary @ the moment for you (Dont go working for R4000 a month now) try to consider the company that you can see yourself growing in and after 3 years earn R25k + a month
 
Nope, don't mention other job offers. One thing I do not do is I do not accept counter offers, no matter what. If I am worth X amount to keep, they should be paying me that already.

Friend of mine worked at a top dev company, left for another company for a 20% raise... 2 weeks later his old company bought him back for a 30% raise... if you're good they're willing to pay for you.

You are young. Do the interviews and if it feels good, move. You obviously like the place you work at now. If it where me, I wouldn't move. But I'm in a vastly different place in my life compared to you.

his pay is not too bad at the moment, so perhaps it would be in his best interest to consider where he can learn the most. Then when he has more behind him he can go salary hunting

Just stay there for a year or so and absorb as much as possible from these ppl. Study as much as possible.

Great working enviroment, awesome people that dont mind me making some mistakes along the way and lenient situation being I have blood disease: Amyloidosis which means sometimes I have to leave early for doctors visits, wont be feeling too awesome so I won't come in and can only let them know the night before.. And I mean this is a bi-weekly thing and they have been really supportive through it all.

If you don't really want to move, why think about it at all? And I'm glad that the dev house you're at are sympathetic with your condition and happy to accommodate you. It's good to know that some workplaces still care.

I say stay where you are. Learn as much as you can.

I was in a sort of similar position last year. I was unhappy in my job because of the repetitive nature of it, so I went for interviews, got 3 offers, selected one and then resigned. The company I worked for then made a counter offer with a higher salary and much more interesting work.

My uncle's brother helped me make a decision, and got me to write up a list of positives and negatives about each option. One of the positives of staying where I was, was that I got on great with my colleagues. But then, I thought about it, and realized that I have never been in a job where I have not got on with my colleagues. I was comfortable where I was, in other words, problem is that getting comfortable can be hazardous to your career.

So, dont stay just because you like your colleagues. You will meet new ones, and probably get on with them too. However, be careful who your boss is. Not getting on with your new boss can really make your life hell.

Stay at your current employers! :D

Other people might be not so nice and lenient!
