CAR OF THE YEAR RANKINGS - 2012

1. Hyundai Elantra 1.8 GLS - 230 points
2. Kia Picanto 1.2 EX - 155
3. VW Jetta 1.4 TSI 118kW Highline - 141
4. Suzuki Kizashi 2.4i SDLX - 49
5. Alfa Romeo Giulietta 125kW Distinctive - 48
6. Audi A6 3.0 TDI quattro S tronic - 30
7. Ford Focus 2.0 TDCi Trend PowerShift - 27
8. Citroën DS4 1.6 THP 200 Sport - 22
9. Peugeot 5008 Active 2.0 HDi - 20
10. Mercedes-Benz SLK 350 - 3

It's interesting to see how they were evaluated:
Judges are urged to determine how well each car fares against its natural competitors (rather than its fellow COTY finalists) in areas like value for money, driving dynamics, technology, safety and style, among other factors.

So it's not that the Hyundai is a better car than say the Alfa, but in it's segment it fares very well! And I have to admit at it's starting price, it's definitely a car you can't ignore.

The Elantra did not just win, it masacred the competition. Seriously thinking of getting myself one.
 
Korean 1 + 2... Havn't seen Fazda since this report came out, maybe he pegged himself.

ha! never thought i'd live to see the day when Merc takes 10th place...

...Kia Picanto in second place... Hmmm, i was actually considering getting one of those!

It's not that interesting. I can tell you that the Elantra, Picanto and Jetta shared 72.5% of the points allocated, and the SLK was awarded 3 points, by one person, out of 725. ;) Just to clarify, each judge is given an allocation of 25 points they can distribute among the contenders with a limit of 10 points per car and - if I recall - with a minimum spread of 4 cars.

From the article:
30 jury members had 25 points at their disposal, which they had to divide between no more than five cars and no less than three - the same way it's done in the European COTY competition.

From the results table in front of me, 725 points were awarded. 725 / 25 = 29. One of the judges must've eaten the prawn cocktail. ;)

As I implied I was sketchy on the exact limitations of scoring, but I'm quite certain of the results.
