IS is dodgy

I would never recommend IS - Internet Solutions to anyone.

I am using IS at the office and telkom isp at home, even thou it is telkom, i am not really complaining about their speeds, price is the only thing. but with IS i dont even know ... cheap crap ...

I have a 1mb line here at the office and with my current IS account i get 7-13kbs download rates. All international traffic is really poor. local is also not the best. i dont know if it is just now or if it will get better, but currently i am highly unimpressed.

With my telkom account at home i dont have problems with download speeds or international gaming (WoW) pings decent. IS, my MSN d/c every 5 mins and i cant voice chat international or not even close video con ...

Whatever ISP you get or have, try get Saix based one.

Whilst IS does have their fair share of problems i have to disagree with you. I would NEVER recommend anything Telkom-based to anyone. If IS are having problems that it is all down to Telkom's monopoly in the end anyway.

I think it depends a lot on what you are going to be using your dsl for. For me, the 30 gig local that comes with IS accounts is just great for local torrents and newsgroups etc. This is so much better than any current telkom offering.

For me, the speed/relaibilty has never been an issue with IS. Maybe I am just lucky, but in the 3 months I have been with them, international has only gone down by me once, and that was not for long.

So i would still go with IS. At least they are an independent isp and are trying to push this country's telecommunications in the right direction, unlike telkom!
 
I have found that IS uncapped accounts have poor performance where their limited accounts actualy have very good performance.

I have to disagree. The slow international speeds on IS has nothing to do with Telkom. It is because they use satellites for international connectivity, with slower latency. The satellite transmissions are also prone to weather and sun conditions. The maximum available bandwidth on the satellite connection is also not nearly enough for all IS ADSL users.

Indeed, IS's oversubscription issues have not helped. But that does not change the issue that Telkom is in control at the end of the day and charges way too much for its bandwidth.

One of the reasons IS use sat. is because Telkom control the SAT3 cable - note the huge price difference between DSL uncapped and the new DSL uncapped over fibre.
So Telkom (spit) are to blame.
 
Agreed.

If Telkom did not charge exorbitant prices for bandwidth on its SAT3/SAFE monopoly IS would never have needed to buy expensive satellite technology.

Don't know where you sprung from, but IS cannot be called "cheap crap". "Expensive crap" if you feel that way, but not cheap!

They run international via satellite so there will be latency - this is known. Normally I get fair speeds in the day and flatline my line at night, so I cannot agree with you. And I will avoid SAIX based ISPs unless desperate - IS are a much more pleasant lot than Telkom, have been providing internet access longer than Telkom, and have a lot of respect in the corporate world.
 
BTW, has that SAT upgrade IS talked about a few months ago ever happend yet? And what are they planning on doing bout their poor international speeds? :mad:
 
I get fine speeds on IS as well. I use skype lots and it works fine. Maybe your office line is just congested by more users were at home you have the line for yourself.

it all depends on what you intend to do.
what do you need to do? Gaming / p2p / news groups / email / surfing etc
 
It's fine for local gaming. Better than IS imho. Neither are "good" for international gaming.
 
At the risk of stating the obvious....
Are you comparing IS ADSL during business hours to Saix ADSL afterhours?

If you are, then it's not a very fair comparison.


If I compare the 512K Diginet to IS at work, to my iBurst at home, my iBurst wins hands down.
Unfortunately there are a number of things to consider.

1.) The diginet is shared with about 80 people. iBurst Shared with about 3.
2.) I use the diginet during office hours (duh!)
3.) I use the iBurst late at night during quiet times.

so yeah. Just a point.
