President Jacob Zuma was incredulous on Thursday when he was asked if he would consider bringing back the death penalty for murders.

“I won’t do it. Absolutely not,” he said, after explaining the abolition of the death penalty was a decision of the Constitutional Court.

Of course he won't - most of the gov't are criminals!

The only way to deal with violent criminals is to execute them. Until then SA is a breeding ground for criminals and unfortunately things aren't going to improve here :(

One of the judges that rewrote the new constitution way back said on a radio interview:
"Be very careful in who's hands you place the death penalty."

I'm divided on this issue.
:(

It has been placed in the hands of criminals.

Yes death penalty will instantly fix:

1) justice system - courts, etc etc
2) policing system - competency, cars, etc etc

All we need is the DP and rest we don't need to sort out :)

...imho first get no 1 and no 2 and then DP. DP is pointless if rest of the system is not in place. Seriously in a country where you can't even do proper DNA, how de hell do you want to set someone to be killed by the law ?

He won't bring it back as it might just backfire on him one day. Wouldn't it be ironic if the president who brings back the death penalty gets the death penalty...

First you want to STOP the ANC led government from changing the Constitution.
Then you want them to bring back the the death penalty which would REQUIRE changing the Constitution
 Make up your mind!

Tell me, do you really want to give the government the legal means to execute people?

And yet JZ and cronies want to change the constitution ... as stated above, he know that most of his chums and probably himself would most likely end up hanging by the scruffs of their armani collars.

Ironic isn't it? :D

Good, scary point!

Oh now he thinks the constitution should be respected?
I call chameleon .. or there's no opportunity for pilfering around the death penalty issue.

Executed for what exactly? I don't think HZ would bring it back either if there are any DA voters out there thinking she would.

Would anyone really want *this* government to have the power to execute people?
