One week after the launch of Vodacom's high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA), tests have shown that downlink speeds are far less than its advertised 1.8Mbps.

MyADSL founder Rudolph Muller, who tested the technology last week, says: “Most of the time the download speeds are around 564Kbps.”

A Vodacom spokesperson admits: “One should expect speeds of between 400Kbps and 800Kbps, with peaks of approximately 1.4Mbps… only under perfect conditions are HSDPA downlink speeds 1.8Mbps.”

Nothing new, Vodacom advertised 3G with "up to 384KBs" speeds, i've never actually experienced even those speeds. Usually you only get the advertised speeds in "perfect" conditions which includes LOCAL only [not international] + perfect reception + probably downloading from a Vodacom server.
 
i bought a 3G datacard yesterday, since HSDPA has come out the prices ave plumeted...see your local vodacom store :)
 
they also market it as "faster than ADSL" meaning it should be a minimum 1mbps in SA, or 1gbps overseas. isn't this yet another case of false advertising?

I saw that ad today, and imho it is misleading. HSDPA is NOT faster than ADSL, in fact it seems that in most cases it isn't even as fast as Telkom's overpriced, meagre local offering. ASA anyone...? Actually I expect Telkom has made a complaint already.
 
Why would they complain? They own half of Vodacom anyways... it's better for them to keep quiet and let the suckers spend their money! I suppose its a win/win either way for Telskum :(
