Hello, I've scraped together R5k for a box, psu, mobo, ram, cpu and display card and here's what I've come up with:

coolermaster elite 343 - R305
gigabyte h61m - R519
Core i3-2100 - R1147
corsair cx500 - R684
kingston 2gb 1333mhz x 2 - R284
geforce gtx 560 - R2149
Total = R5088
hdd - already have.
screen, keyboard, mouse - already have.

Firstly, do I have to worry about the display card fitting into the case? I want to go for a micro atx case this time.

Is everything compatible with each other? And is there anything wrong with this setup?

I'm going to be using it for gaming as well as projects for my son's school work. Is the gtx560 too powerful for the i3? Should I rather get an i5 and a gtx550 instead? (My screen is a 17")

Very Decent system for 5k :)

I would say though Maybe buy a 6850 and get a i5 cpu but otherwise very solid :)
 
Id rather get this setup, than get an i5 and drop to a 550.... but if you can, scrape together some more for a i5... although there's nothing wrong with your current specs as above.

Where are you looking at getting it?

On the screen he will be using the Res will be very low, so a slight drop in gpu will make little or no difference.
 
On a 17" screen the iGPU might even be enough, no need for a discrete GPU.

OP - whats the resoution on your screen?

I highly doubt it, I say get the 560 or 6850. Games will definitely suffer otherwise.
 
Running those cards with that screen is like running a nuclear reactor to power a kettle.

I would drop to a Hd6770 or a hd7750 and save the difference. Otherwise keep the current card and get a bigger screen later on.

Its a whole lot easier/cheaper to get a decentish GPU now and upgrade screen later than doing it the other way around.
 
My 17" screen is only 1280x1024, but I plan on upgrading it later to a bigger widescreen.

BTW I'm getting everything at prophecy - always get good service there.

If you're happy with Prophecy then so be it, but take a look at Rebeltech too... they're a fair bit cheaper.

Then GTX560Ti or HD6870/50
I cant quite recall the difference between the 560 and 560Ti but I do remember at the price it was going for initially it was enough to make me never want to recommend a plain 560

At the moment the normal 560. I see the Ti is ~400 more so I'll see if I can scrape the extra money together or not.
 
@stevovo

Just take this into consideration: Don't do scraping if you cannot justify the expense. Getting the 560ti with the i3 has the benefit that the i3 chip is "cheap" enough that you can still upgrade to a better CPU at a later stage.

I cannot comment as to the motherboard, perhaps someone knows offhand how the mb is wrt the CPU/GFX?

Then perhaps try a HD6870. It goes for as low as R2000, but beats a GTX560 by roughly 10%
