Reccomended Insurance Approved Vehicle Tracking

I am doing some numbers on what vehcle tracking would cost.
My insurance states that I need a tracking device if the value of the vehicle is R250k or higher or if it is a VW.

Is there a basic tracking device I can look at for this requirement?
If so, how much would this cost?

This. I went through the same thing (I'm sure you'll find similar threads all over if you do a search) - and all alternate options are much more expensive/or have contracts/etc. etc.

Tracetec is simple and cheap.
 
Tracetec looks very cost effective, however this was the response from my insurance:

Unfortunately Tracetec is for vehicles below R200 000,00. Insurers require a Top of the Range Product that automatically alerts the tracking company and not a phone-in product.

The Top of the Range Products to consider - Tracker Alert, Netstar Early Warning System, C-Track or Matrix.

any suggestions on which of these are best to start looking at?

get another insurance company
 
doesnt make sense
they first say that only cars over 250k require a tracking device
then when you ask them about tracetec they say its for cars under R200??

are you doing this through a broker?
maybe now is a good time to get one

yeah, I'm going through a broker, I'm busy shopping around for a new insurance company.
 
Get another insurance company...

Mine tried the "you need a tracker" thing with me 2 years ago, I shopped around, got a better quote that didn't need tracker.. presented it to my insurance company and they bettered the quote and dropped the tracker requirement. I then told my broker straight up that if they try that with me ever again I will move insurance companies and not give them the chance to match or better the quote.

shouldnt your broker be doing this?
either way its upto to you whether you want to go with one of the other companies
i didnt; as they have 36 month contracts and iirc they need to be hardwired to the vehicle itself

I stand for correction, my broker is underwritten by Hollard.
 
Two and a half years later, I'm looking what MyBB users have to say about tracking.
I don't necessarily like the idea of not using GPS tracking - e.g. (taken from Tracetec site, I understand Beame works the same)

No one knows which area a vehicle will go into during a hijacking - how does one know for sure that all areas are covered by TraceTec/Beame?
How far can these transmitters transmit?

then what is the best to use?
