Most young British Muslims support violence against women who 'dishonour' their families, a Panorama investigation will claim today.

The hard-hitting BBC documentary reveals more than two thirds of Asians aged 16 to 34 say communities should live according to 'honour' or 'izzat'.

Research carried out for the show found nearly one in five – 18 per cent – said certain acts thought to shame families were justification for violence.

The possible reasons included disobeying a father, marrying someone unacceptable or wanting to end a marriage.

Honour-related violence can include acid attacks, abduction, mutilations, beatings, and death. But 94 per cent of those questioned said there was 'never a justification' for murder.

BBC1's Panorama programme on 'honour' killings will be screened tonight at 8.30pm.

A study of police data by the Iranian and Kurdish Women's Rights Organisation recorded over 2,800 honour crimes a year.

Nazir Afzal, lead prosecutor on the crimes for the Crown Prosecution Service, said: 'We don't know the true figure of honour killings. It's anything between 10 and 12 a year in this country.'

Jasvinder Sanghera, of the charity Karma Nirvana, set up a helpline for women at risk. It receives around 500 calls a month but she says this is the tip of the iceberg.

Of 500 Asians interviewed for the Panorama poll, 75 per cent of young men and 63 per cent of young women said families should live according to 'honour'.

In 2006, Banaz Mahmod, from Mitcham, south London, was strangled on the orders of her father and uncle because they thought her boyfriend was unsuitable.

Cousins Mohammed Saleh Ali and Omar hussain, both 28, were jailed for a minimum of 22 and 21 years respectively for the honour killing of the 20-year-old Iraqi Kurd.

The victim's father Mahmod Mahmod and uncle Ari Mahmod were jailed for life at the Old Bailey in 2007.

A Home Office spokesman said: 'We are determined to end honour violence.'

They are exceptions from the norm and not "real Muslims".
It must be their "culture" not their religion.
Islam is a religion of peace.

Did I leave out any of the usual excuses?

It they feel so strongly about this, let them continue.

They can eradicate themselves as much as they want.

Just leave the Caucasians alone.

Interesting so many women agreeing with the twisted honour system.

Most people post articles in CA without any comment or reasoning. ;)

Honor killings are unacceptable. Happy now?

So one in five believe the violence is acceptable, yet they title the story "More than two thirds of young British Muslims believe 'honour' violence is acceptable"

Just because two thirds believe they should live according to honor does not mean they advocate violence as a remedy. The article clearly states only one in five believe that.

Reporting at its best.

Yes, all of yours

TIA... oh wait.

A more interesting cultural feature is marrying first and second cousins. Throughout the Islamic world this is a very significant factor - between a third and half of all marriages are to cousins. In Britain, around 50% of all Pakistani marriages are to cousins - Pakistanis account for 3.4% of the population and just over 30% of all birth defects, according to a BBC2 Newsnight report on 16 November 2005.

So 82% of young British Muslims do not find "honour" violence acceptable.

Agreed the title is totally misleading bullschit.

2/3rds of those interviewed said people should live with honour. Only 18% said the violence was acceptable.

One in five is still too many. I don't see how you can see that as acceptable?

It's not, though the article headline should really reflect the truth. Violence in any form should not be accepted.

The 2008-09 bulletin states: "More than one in four women (28%) and around one in six men (16%) had experienced domestic abuse since the age of 16. These figures are equivalent to an estimated 4.5 million female victims of domestic abuse and 2.6 million male victims."

I don't think anyone is saying it is acceptable, just that the journalist that wrote this article is a dishonest sack of schit.

18% != over 2/3rds. There is no excuse for this.

Maybe he is a product of South African schooling? Then again, journalist don't usually find themselves at the top of their class in Maths.

It is one thing to misquote someone or take a quote out of context. It is dishonest sure but at least the article is internally consistent even if it is out of touch with reality. The journo at least tries to make it seem plausible for the reader.

This sack of schit just wrote an article that is internally inconsistent and blatantly so. It shows complete contempt for the reader.

Not if you studied Journalism at Stellenbosch that is a post grad course. Their selection process is (at least was) tough and only the best of the best made it.

This is appalling and very wrong ! even if it is 1% it would still be wrong. How can anyone claim to kill another person in the name of Islam ? How can a parent kill a child because they did not want to marry their cousin or someone else and then say its in the name of Islam ?

How can anyone misunderstand the Quran and Shariah so much ? I understand that there is some discrepancies in the percentages but it really does not matter if its 66% or 0,6 % , these people should be hunted down and punished and educated.

May Allah have mercy on their misguided souls.

My copy of the Koran says:
9.5: So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the Mushrikun wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
9.29: Fight those who do not believe in Allah, nor in the latter day, nor do they prohibit what Allah and His Apostle have prohibited, nor follow the religion of truth, out of those who have been given the Book, until they pay the tax in acknowledgment of superiority and they are in a state of subjection.
How is this to be understood?

Fortunate it is for the world that the vast majority of it's 1.2 billion Muslims are quiet, generous, peace loving and God fearing persons who seek to live in an harmonious relationship with people of other faiths, and who do not take the words of their founder, Muhammad, literally in all circumstances. In this respect, they are not much different from the great majority of devotees of other faiths, especially Christianity, where the Christians seldom take the words of Jesus, their founder, either seriously or literally.
