Pretoria's name to stay!

Is it acceptable to sacrifice 27 street names for the retention of the city name?

Pretoria - The name Pretoria can stay as it is, but the names of about 27 streets in the city will be changed - this is what the ANC "offered" in behind the scenes meetings about the controversial naming issue, Beeld reported on Friday.

Tshwane executive mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa met with ANC leaders on the renaming issue on Thursday.

After a protracted eight-year renaming battle, the ANC apparently decided to let the proposed name change of Pretoria to Tshwane go.

Ramokgopa is expected to make an announcement about this next week.

Why is ANY change necessary?

Because they have a budget and they must use it for pointless BS.

What is racist to Church Street's name? I understand (though I don't agree) them wanting to change political street names, but something like Church surely isn't political!?

Probably because there is no Mosque Street... Can't really think of anything.

What are the street names going to be?

DA's candidate for Pretoria mayor, Brandon Topham, just Tweeted: "Name of Pretoria may change, not correct interpretation to think other wise (sic). DA in favor of Pretoria-Tshwane."

Sorry, WTF?

I think he means that only the city is Pretoria, but the municipality is still Tshwane.

I think the DA are looking for a compromise that at least won't make everyone upset...

They are aware that the ANC will ram through the changes regardless of the opposition to it. One just has to look at Durban for evidence.. I think they received 200 odd submissions (more than likely from an even smaller set of people) and the majority of them were adopted regardless of how divisive they were.

Hell I lived on Queen Mary Avenue which is now apparently Sphiwe Zuma... (we won't go into the fact that they spelt the name wrong ANYWAY).. just like they did with Lena Ahrens (spelt Lina Arendse on the signposts)

The next ANC lot will probably change it anyway. I see they are changing commissioner in Joburg, sad really that name is synonymous with going to Jhb, before the criminals took it over of course.

That's what I was asking too.
Vanity. Same reason Zuma is putting Mandela on bank notes he doesn't want to risk someone else doing it if he should not survive Mangaung. Mandela always said people should refrain from naming things after people who are still alive (not that Mandela can still do anything to harm his own legacy).

Yup, it is just a matter of time I reckon before Pretoria has it's name changed. Whether it be 1 year or more, it will change.

Durban names suxxor - the only benefit is that I get to drive on dead terrorists

Why spend millions on name changes, rather use it to maintain the 'toll' roads in gauteng. Do we have to think of everything for them?

Spending the money where it should means they have to employ someone capable of doing the job, why do this when you can get your buddys to create the new signs with a bonus for you for getting him the work of course.

but surely the buddy can maintain the roads as well, with a kickback to them.
