The country’s education system is worse today than the “gutter education” that the youth of 1976 gave their lives to overthrow.

On Thursday night, prominent academic and Struggle hero Mamphela Ramphele launched one of the most stinging critiques yet of the much vaunted matric pass rate, saying it was deceptive, consigning thousands to a life that promised neither further education nor employment.

Addressing the sixth annual Solomon Mahlangu education lecture at the University of Johannesburg, Ramphele lashed out at the 30 percent pass benchmark, saying it degraded education standards and was used for political purposes.

Ja, brave indeed. Heard that the DA was trying to get her to join them. Wish the rest of the population will be as 'enlightened' as she is & see past the ANC propoganda bull****
 
Amazing how long it takes for the penny to drop!

I could have told you this, the minute we slithered into the OBE system which aimed at working to the lowest common denominator.
 
The education authorities seem to think that kids are the same as adults when it comes to learning.
They seem to think that they can absorb stuff by being lectured, and that they have the self-control and self-discipline to concentrate on what is being said in order to improve themselves.

They don't realise that kids need to be guided and lead, and inspired and interested - and that different kids need different methods/speeds/etc to learn properly.

Why else would they think that one teacher in a class of 45 11-year-olds has a CHANCE of imparting ANY kind of education? And that same teacher is responsible for 10 classes - 450 kids? And the teacher needs to write up behavioural reports etc as well as progress reports on every kid... so if she spends ONE MINUTE a day on each child just writing notes etc on how the child is coping, that's a full working day before she even stands up in front of the class. Then add prep and marking...


The government sees a matric certificate as an attendance certificate. You earn it just by managing to attend a school for the majority of the time you're supposed to. And then they think that certificate actually proves you competent and capable.

The fact that universities are seriously considering entrance exams and ignoring the matric certificate exemptions speaks volumes.

OBE is fantastic when it's implemented properly. It's NOT. The teachers are NOT trained in it properly, they don't possess the skills needed, or the time. The best teachers implemented their own form of OBE long before it became policy. But they are very much in the minority. And with the money that the state is prepared to pay teachers, they will remain in the minority.
 
So I guess the race card won't be pulled because she's not DA and not white?
 
10's of thousands of unemployable youth in this country as a result.

OBE puts way to much work on the teachers as besides teaching they have to do way more administrative work, so if they follow through with it fully they end up far too overworked (and underpaid). I'm not just sucking this out of my thumb, my mom is a teacher and is quite involved in all of this.

Agreed OBE in theory is fantastic...

But anyone who knew the education system in this country at the time knew it was doomed to failure.
