And today, on the campus of the University of the Western Cape, a kind of voluntary segregation has re-emerged, with like sticking by like.

“There is not a lot of mixing,” said Nokwanda Khanyile, 21, a business student from Durban. “The coloreds stick to themselves. The whites, too.”

Like many young black people, Ms. Khanyile would not consider remaining in Cape Town to pursue a career in business.

“Cape Town is racist,” she said. “Everybody knows that.”

Seems the perception that Cape Town is racist is not restricted to Cape Town!

Yip - definitely racist because of voluntary segregation - damn blacks don't want to join the other groups.

This about sums it up, hence the black "unhappiness", we don't have it, so it must be racist.

Cape Town is the only major metropolis in South Africa where black people are not the majority

More mixed race couples in CT than anywhere else in the country.

Its the attitude of people that come here that needs to change.
 
I actually find Cape Townians less racist than the rest of South Africa. :S

That is a pretty broad statement....calling a entire city racist. I am sorry...but so what if the colourd or white kids dont wanna play with you? Do you need them to validate you as a person? If you are a good person then its their loss. Besides...it is natural for birds of a feather to flock together...in general. Besides....we always hear about our culture this and our culture that from the ANC for example....so in many cases the culture might be so different that there is not much common ground to build a friendship etc on.

It is a free country....you cant force people to mingle and be friends.

And just to ad...when I was in college in Cape Town...our little group consisted of a white lesbian, a straight ginger...a bi white female, a straight black girld from Botswana and two confused coloured guys and we all were great friends.

My ex was at that uni - and she often brought "mixed" race friends back to my flat... maybe she was the exception.

I just get tired of the head-in-the-sand attitude I find a lot here on myBB where people complain about race being brought into political discussions or current affairs, as if race is not an issue in this country anymore. People want to pretend no one is racist (except the ANC). Well, yes, people voluntarily stick to their own racial groups and are racist towards other groups. Especially towards black people. In Cape Town anyway.

I never said CT is racist, I said there is a perception that Cape Town is racist - perceptions aren't always accurate - and that this perception is not limited to people in CT but even the NYT is running a story on it.

Really, you have research that shows that there are more mixed race couples in CT than anywhere else in the country? I'd like to see that - as far as I can tell JHB is the mixing pot of this country

Funny that you say it's the attitude of people that come here that needs to change, you just dismiss people who feel they have been discriminated against as if they are the problem. There is no racism is there?
 
What is the problem?we sort of had the same thing at school during break,didn't mean we were racist or anything.we all got on very well

You get racists everywhere. Why the NYT cares about Cape Town being perceived as racist god only knows. I am sure they have cities...actually entire states that are more racist than Cape Town...or at least could be perceived to be.

Stupid little article if you ask me.

Perhaps this perception is not just limited to me but all posters on MyBB even if the NYT is not running an opinion piece about it.

EDIT: Oh, nearly forgot the ubiquitous "blah blah, move on" reply that follows from the advocate of traffic flow.
 
Im not sure what the blacks want, im so gatvol of this "cape town is racist" nonsense. Do the blacks who come here in droves from the eastern cape

because their government is a mess expect everyone to just roll out the red carpet and offer them free t-shirts and snacks? jobs are scarce,

housing even scarcer. I think some people just dont like the fact that blacks are a minority around these parts.
