The Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa) on Friday announced it had launched a legal challenge against the implementation of the controversial Gauteng e-toll system.
The bid will attempt to derail the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral)’s April implementation date.
Motorists will be paying 30cents per kilometre to use some of the province’s highways.
The group said court papers were served on Friday.
The challenge is largely based on alleged violations of the Consumer Protection Act and insufficient public consultation.
Outa’s Wayne Duvenage said, “It is a sad day when government develops a tense and threatening relationship with citizens. It is trying to force an unpopular and unjust system into being.”
He said other methods were available to recover Sanral’s R20 billion debt, such as a small increase to the fuel levy.
Earlier in March, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) embarked on a national strike to protest against the implementation of the e-tolls.
