I don't know if anyone's noticed this, but many Video Rental stores
are watering down their collections with DVD's which are clearly
marked "Not For Rental".

It's also clear that they're well aware that what they're doing is wrong,
since they come up with "creative" techniques to cover it up.

Anything from colouring it in with marker pen or sticking a sticker
with contact details over it *cough* Video 2000 *cough* to using
a piece of insulation tape to mask it out. Mr Video and various other
Video rental outlets are culprits too.

These are video rental stores are crying they're going out of
business as a result of movie piracy, but the fact is, they're not
exactly playing by the rules themselves. :mad:

They are forced to because of piracy. I really can't blame them for trying anything to survive. That's besides the lost business from DSTV's BoxOffice.
 
Ow well, at least their business is legal. Yes they will be out of business eventaully, people in future will not be renting DVD's there will be VOD services available. Let them enjoy their money now till it lasts.

Yoh that is super cheap, my local video store doesn't do this, they have a ring around the center of the disc and a small sticker at the cover box of the DVD.
 
How do they charge video stores for a legal rental copy?

If just a once of payment(most likely) any idea as too how much?

I would be inclined to agree with this if it weren't for the ridiculous rental prices.
I mean, take DVD Box Sets as an example, in some cases they charge almost 50%
of what the Box set costs just to rent it.

Perhaps if rental costs were more reasonable, more people would rent stuff.

Go to video town. 5dvds for a week is like R30 or R50.

Nope,actually they charge according to how many copies a shop or franchise purchase.The more purchased the less charged per copy.Also they tend to charge according to popularity of movie and not as much as R800-R1000 per copy.(Used to work in a video shop)

Some video shops will have "Not for Rental" copies purely in their Art and Foreign movies section as the big suppliers don't really supply those.
 
I owned a video store from 2004 to 2008. Mine was a franchise. Quite often the stock that was supplied had 'Not for rental' printed on it. This is due to the distributors (SKHE and NMHE) not producing the printed covers in any other way. I.e. they produce covers for the retail market, and supply that material to rental stores as well. I questioned this at the time for the same reasons you are questioning it. No doubt there are titles being rented that are not from the official sources as well.

And speaking of official sources, as a video store, you mainly purchase your titles from the distributors. Prices vary from about R100 to about R300 depending on the popularity. There are bulk discounts if you purchase more than a quantity, but these are per title and at the discretion of the distributor.

I agree that they will not be around too much longer. That is why I sold.

That makes a lot of sense. What gets to me is the efforts these Video Rental outlets
go to to hide the "Not for Rental" on the DVD's. If they'd just left them as they were,
I wouldn't have given it a second thought. To me masking it out is an admission of guilt.

they probably have people giving them grief. you know, those know it all house wives .... :p
 
Some of the retail version of DVDs sold at outlets such as Makro and Hyperstores also are a bit suspect...

Here is a legit version of Garfield purchased for the young uns from Makro last year R180.00 .... a scan of the inner inlay...

Much like the Rio DVD I bought for someone off Kalahari. It had a clip at the
beginning which basically told you to check inside your box for an Angry Birds
expansion code (free extra levels).

But because NEXT video are cheap and nasty, they didn't bother to include
them. So yeah, stay away from NEXT Video DVD's, the discs they use are
really crap as well, and cause the DVD player to vibrate and rattle. One of
them actually broke the plastic disc balancer on my Sinotec DVD player.

Pretty sure most chinese bootlegs are better quality. :(

Video stores are battling to survive, there's no doubt about that.
The greedy suppliers such as Ster Kinekor and Nu Metro are much to blame for this. I have inside info. These are people who want to lecture me about my torrents over the braai, and fail to understand that their business models are not sustainable in the 21st century.

A fish rots from the top...
